So...they're saying a 'flag burning' ammendment is looking like sure thing, now. Flat out making it illegal to burn a US flag in protest.
I'm a military vet, from a line of vets - father, grandfathers, uncle, cousin...just all around a pretty military background.
We've all gone overseas into war zones in defense of our country and the flag. Desert Storm I & II, Vietnam, WWII, Korea...we've been there.
I don't like people burning the flag. It does to me exactly what they want it do - gets my dander up. As someone (Peter David, I think, but don't quote me) pointed out, it's actually kind-of a lousy form of protest. It gets people riled up, sure, but not because of whatever you're protesting. Most folks wouldn't have any idea what you're protesting, just that you're burning the flag. Doesn't really get a message across.
So what I'm here to say is, the thought of this passing ammendment just makes me sick.
If someone burns a flag, all they're doing is destroying a piece of cloth. That's it.
If it becomes illegal for someone to burn a flag, the very meaning behind the flag is destroyed and the flag itself becomes nothing but a piece of cloth.
Despite everything going on in this country these days, the flag still stands for freedom and that includes the freedom to burn it if that's what someone wants to do.
Take that away, and you've taken away the last vestige of what this country is supposed to be about.
