Uhura’s remarkable affinity for languages is well-known aboard the Enterprise, as it was at the Academy. She’s often asked to translate phrases for people, and she’s translated the phrase “I love you” the most. She knows countless ways to express love in its various forms…between siblings, couples, parents and children, friends…and she knows she’s fortunate to know the feeling of the words as well.

Something that’s not quite as well-known is how acute her hearing actually is. When she was younger, she unabashedly used this singular talent to get her way, knowing just the right thing to say at the right time. Uhura can hear a quiet conversation three tables away in the Mess when it’s crowded and loud. She can hear a whisper across a room when others are paying attention to a single speaker in the front.

Most of the time, Uhura purposefully tunes out the cacophony of languages and accents and measures of communication around her to focus on her task, or her conversation, or her own melody. There are some things, though, that she hears no matter whether she wants to or not. Her subconscious has become particularly attuned to the whispers, and conjecture, and notes of disbelief…what does a girl like her see in someone like him? He can’t even love her.

There is more than one way to hear an expression of love. At the end of the day, when they are together and the noise of the world surrounding them is buffered by darkness and the comforting presence they are to each other, when mere words are left behind and all that’s left is the way words feel, Uhura hears his love for her. It reverberates through him, and echoes in her, and its harmony swells between them in a connection that simply cannot be duplicated with any language.

When the connection is broken, when she is alone with her own melody once more, she knows of all the ways to express love, the way he shares with her is the purest and most complete. She hears him, and no words are necessary.

spock, uhura
