...Mayr and I carried on a lively correspondence for a number of years, and in one handwritten letter dated 16 April 1999, he quipped that, “Of course, cladistics is a religion and once you are a ‘born again’ cladist you can ignore anything in conflict with the dogma.” Some years ago, in 1996, the distinguished Russian paleontologist Evgeny Kurochkin reflected a similar disdain for the certitude of the more ardent practitioners of the field, noting in a letter to me that “it looks like... biology in the 1940s and 1950s in former Soviet Union, which have not fundamentals of Lysenko biology.” For those unfamiliar with this name, under Stalin, Trofim Lysenko (1898-1976) initiated a campaign of defamation, firing, arrest, and even death of many scientists who did not adhere to his pseudoscientific views. Lysenkoism set back the advancement of Soviet biology and genetics by decades.
