Eleanor Brennan, a young British rider, has been killed after her horse stumbled and fell on top of her during a three-day event in Florida.
The 21-year-old suffered head and chest injuries in the fall at the cross-country stage of the Florida International in Ocala and died shortly afterwards in hospital.
Event organisers said her horse, Mr Barnabus, struck the gate while attempting to clear a fence and rolled over on to its neck, trapping Brennan underneath. The horse died instantly.
Captain Mark Phillips, who revealed Brennan had worked at his Gloucestershire estate with his second wife Sandy Pflueger, a former coach of the US dressage team, said: "It's a tragedy and everyone is very sad about it. It's especially sad when it happens at what should be a straightforward fence, it should be meat and drink to the rider."
"It's a tragic experience for all of us," said Tom Warriner, chairman of the Florida Horse Park where the event was being staged. Brennan's death is the second at the event. Another rider was killed in a fall in last year.
and i wonder sometimes, if there is a meaning to anything anymore....
