Character: Mihael "Mello" Keehl
Fandom: Death Note
Personality: Mello's strongest point is his vast intelligence. Raised at Wammy's House, an orphanage specifically made for highly gifted children, he was second place in line to be the successor of the greatest detective in the world, L. He had all the potential, and he believed he could make it to the top. Every goal he set for himself he was determined to meet, always pushing himself as hard as he could to make sure he did his best. Only his best was never good enough, and he could never become first. It became an obsession, a burning desire and hatred that he couldn't control. Because despite his brilliant mind, he was too emotional. His rival was more like L in the fact that he could think things through without the cloud of emotions to hinder his decisions, but even L knew that Mello had the potential to turn bad very easily with how often he'd let his emotions take control of him.
Normally emotions wouldn't be a bad thing, and in some cases they weren't, but Mello in particular is more prone to violence and anger than anything else. If something doesn't go the way he plans it infuriates him into a rage which he has no regrets taking out on others around him. Even to the point of pulling a gun on Near at simple mocking, he holds hatred and burning desires far too close to his heart and it's usually the thing that causes him to fail. And of course failure simply means more rage, more hate towards Near himself.
Which of course creates the defining mark of Mello's whole character, his almost crippling inferiority complex to Near. Always being second best gets to him, making his only goal in life to be the first. Unlike Near, his goal isn't exactly to stop Kira. It's simply to beat Near, to be the best. He has no qualms about taking any means necessary, refusing to work with Near on the case and instead opting to leave the orphanage all together to find his own way. Own ways which lead him to being a leader in the mafia, playing dirty and even going as far as blackmailing and threatening the president of the US to meet his goals. He'll hurt and kill innocent people, uncaring of who gets in his way so long as his plan goes through. His hate and inferiority blind him to what's right in front of him, causing him to make mistakes and get himself hurt in the process.
He's also needlessly reckless and stubborn, willing to press on even when all hope seems lost. He doesn't care of his own life, his sense of self perseverance dangerously low when it comes to meeting his goal of being the best. Even going as far as blowing up a building while he himself is still inside it, being the own cause of the horrible scarring on his face and shoulder and tearing him apart with the knowledge of failure. He doesn't care, and probably would do it all over again if he had the chance. He's too stubborn to know when to quit though, and despite it all he does grow up a small amount and realize he has to do something to at least give Near a chance. However, he doesn't do it directly. Never directly working with Near, never letting him know he's doing something for him. Because that would be admitting he needed him, admitting that he finally realized he couldn't do everything on his own. His one final act of recklessness was kidnapping a holder of the Death Note, trying to force the hand of Kira to make a move under the watchful eye of Near.
While he fully believed he wouldn't get out alive himself, it's shown that he does hold one major regret and also has the ability to care and be loyal. Matt, his friend from Wammy's that came to help him when he had no one else to rely on, got killed being a decoy for him and he openly states regret for the first time and apologizes, saying that he never meant for Matt to die. So despite his hatred and general attitude that pushes most people away, the very few friends he does make he actually cares for and wishes no harm to come upon them. But even still, is willing to take the chance and put them in a dangerous situation to meet his goals. He simply has too much emotion clouding his judgement, and when things go wrong he takes them personally and insists on blaming himself. Because he should have been in control, and because he was unable to do so when things fall apart he takes it as a direct blow to his own capabilities.
But despite the flaws in his plans and so much room left open for error, Mello is usually still a cocky little bastard about everything. He thinks he's the best, determined to be the best and flaunts everything he has with an attitude believing he deserves it. He will rarely admit to being wrong, and has no issues rubbing in the fact that he's superior to others and can't be beaten. Which of course when he does fail makes the blow just that much harder, making him that much more angry and prone to explode over it all. Because he was so certain before, having that certainty crushed right before his eyes strikes a cord in him and intensifies his inferiority issues and anger all at once. But even still, he rarely learns his lesson and continues to push forward without remorse or regret.

Abilities: While not possessing any magical or special powers, Mello's abilities lie in his intelligence. A sharp wit to help him get out of almost any situation no matter how dangerous, high enough IQ for him to be able to see any problem and perceive various outcomes and solutions easily, people skills to manipulate and get others to do just about anything he wants them to and the determination to meet any and every goal he sets for himself. Even if it kills him.

Sample writing: The games were timed, the pieces set and the moves carefully planned far more in advance than any of the players had anticipated. One making decisions too hastily, using illegal moves and trying to force the other into a corner. One planned out carefully, possibly more than anticipated. One doomed to a stalemate, the other taking the queen thanks to the distraction from the first game. Or perhaps, it was really the same game all along. He hadn't been the King as he assumed, merely a pawn that had been promoted to believe it stood a chance of winning.
Mello couldn't decide what factor made him more sick. The fact that he had merely been another one of Near's pieces, the fact that he had dragged his only friend into the playing field as well and caused him to lose his life, or the fact that he had failed. Somewhere, buried beneath all the disgust, there was hope. There was a grim satisfaction in what little he had managed to accomplish. Even as a pawn, his moves had been his own. He had done what he could, forced a check. The final move was Near's, if he could be smart enough to preform the checkmate.
But those were not his main thoughts for the moment, merely doubts and frustrations boiling beneath the surface of his mind. There were more important details to focus on, things that made less sense and weren't as easy to analyze. Namely the fact that he was alive and breathing and definitely not in Japan anymore. He wasn't going to lose his cool though, wasn't going to let himself get distracted by minor details like the crown on his head or the unrecognizable location. If it was possible for there to be a Notebook owned by a Death God that could control and kill simply by writing in it, he was willing to believe just about anything at that point.
The device was what caught his attention though, obviously something useful and potentially the answer to some of the more prominent questions. A bit of tinkering, easily enough to navigate, and he was full of more mixed emotions than he was comfortable with. So many things at once, simply piled on top of the problems already there. Narrowed eyes taking in the conversations of others, the conversations of one certain man. One who obviously did not yet know his fate. There was satisfaction there, a smug smirk tugging at the blond's lips as he took joy in such a simple fact. You can be as devious and intelligent as you wanted, but that meant absolutely nothing if you didn't have the common sense and open mind to go with it. One up on Kira, no matter how small, was always enough to make him feel just that much better.
Sample journal entry: [Text]
What does one gain when the dead returns to life? Is there an actual purpose, or is it simply a game of a higher being testing just how far the human spirit can be stretched? I know better than to believe this either Heaven or Hell, and I've seen too much to cast aside the possibility that against whatever odds I've managed to escape the clutches of death for the time being. But that doesn't answer how it was possible or what exactly this place is.
Unlike some others, I'm also not foolish enough to believe this some sort of hoax or trap by an enemy. I've found out a decent amount from reading over this network already upon awakening. That doesn't, however, cease a curious mind from wanting to know more. Details not spoken clearly enough, information not entirely freely given without the right questions being asked. So tell me, can I get what I need with a simple request or should I be told just what I should ask to receive the most useful answer?
