Recently my local council has been replacing traditional street lights with modern more efficient LED units. Usually it is simply a matter of changing the lighting unit and retaining the existing lamp post. However in places where there is no vehicle access, a new lamp post (1) has been introduced, though why it could not become the standard for anywhere is probably down to the cost of replacing hundreds of lamp post.
Lights are maintained via a hydraulic platform fitted to the service truck. The new lamp posts have a hinge (2) about half way up and a locking mechanism (3) toward the base (the normal service panel to access the light's wires/mains supply (4) is, as usual a. To service the light unit, unloc and pull the light unit down on its hinge. Simple, easy and money saving - probably invented by a woman.
