During my five month-long visits to China, spending most of my time in very rural areas, I have seen innumerable uses for bamboo. It is a familiar food, large bamboo is used for roof gutters, water pipes, as scaffolding on buildings 10-floors tall, with woven bamboo mats for the builders to walk on. Paper made from bamboo is well known from early Chinese history and probably add familiar as bamboo chop-sticks. You name it, you can probably make it from bamboo.
A couple of weeks ago a ЖЖ friend posted about bamboo fibre filled pillows; they help with certain allergies such as "hay fever". The next week I received - unsolicited - a catalogue advertising clothing made from bamboo fibre and complementary pair of socks. I have worn and washed the socks ten or twelve times and I expect they will give good service for many weeks.
BAM bamboo clothing catalogue and my free pair of socks (worn and washed 12 times and still looking OK)
The socks are made from a mix of 73% bamboo viscose, 23% polyamide and 1% elastine. The catalogue features a range of casual wear for men and women - dresses, T-shirts, leggings, jogging pants, underwear as well as socks. Check them out at bambooclothing.co.uk
Maybe eco-friendly bamboo fibres will become more widely used for clothing suitable domestic products?
