smokey the bear

AGAIN, BACK TO THIS MEDICAL marijuana thing that is literally captivating Denver (and soon to come, the rest of Colorado.. maybe)

..sort thru that. Crazy, really. I wonder, sociologically, if why this has come to be in Colorado, and specifically Denver, is the remoteness, as it were, of Colorado. Denver, in some opinions a metropolis, is about as isolated a big city in this nation is. ..maybe such a phenomenon as legal pot with almost no effort is endemic to a isolated, fairly forward-thinking city?

To me, it's just fascinating. Now, 10 years ago, I would have been at the first dispensary that opened because Laughing Buddha or Mendocino Beano beats Mexican regular in any direction. But being a I-only-smoke-on-Syrian-holidays guy anymore, I just view this thru a lens of wonder.

In Colorado, the right wing "drugs are bad, mmkay?" types are relegated to a few pockets of towns- the most lively being Colorado Springs (Focus on the Family, anyone?) and Greely, but you get up in the mountain towns, and the lassez faire attitude pervades. The St. Patrick's day before this one, my roomie and I ended up at a bar/pub up in the mountains just outside Boulder. The owner sided up to us and said "We close our doors at 9PM, but we pass a bowl around after. You can scoot, or you can stay and enjoy." My roomate has abstained since high school days (pot doesn't treat her well in the head) but I thought why not? Never got high at a bar before- on top that a bar where the risk of getting busted was 0% (the local police didn't care.) Besides, they had free chocolate cake and pizza. I am not making this up.

So why not get high, Colorado? Geographically, you already have the highest average elevation of any state in the union. And the Divine loves a good joke. Why not almost effortlessly surpass the Californians at their own game?
