Since I'm waiting for
fandom_snowflake to post for today, and mostly just hanging around at home, a meme.
1. Your main fandom of the year?
Check, Please! It makes me actually read the Tumblrs, as much as I loathe the Tumblrs. I've written a couple of very long not!fic (most creative writing I've done in years), and do a lot of lurking and thinking about yarn-based fanworks (yes, yarn-based. Like a Las Vegas Aces toque and a Kent Parson knitted sweater and...) and sighing on chat with
staranise about random either grim or heavily therapeutic headcanons.
2. Your favourite film watched this year?
Arrival. SO GOOD. Lots of thinky. Felt like how I imagine my parents felt watching 2001: A Space Odyssey in the theater when it was new. Lots of grandeur and open space to think through the film and lots of cinematography that was clearly working to put the audience in the feelings of the characters. (Go in expecting sensory overload, but try to go in unspoiled.)
3. Your favourite book read this year?
Um. I haven't been good at a lot of book-reading this year. So we're going with the novel-length id-fic of my heart, by
fahye:
Single Use Weapon. SO MUCH LOYALTY PORN OMG SO MUCH VERY SPIES. I keep meaning to download this one to my Kindle, where I keep the fics I must reread regularly for my sanity.
...oh WAIT, I lied, I also finally read Broken Homes this year, and it was the Rivers of London book that I never knew I needed. Peter getting to use is his architecture knowledge, a literal pissing contest, lots of people putting Peter in situations because racism and him thriving anyway because he took knowledge: local and put all of his stats in charisma.
4. Your favourite TV show of the year?
That I consistently watched? Brooklyn 99, show of my heart. That T and I mainlined because it was so goddamn well done? Cleverman, although Luke Cage is probably a close second.
5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?
I can't recommend the folks at the Ravelry
Harry Potter Knitting/Crocheting House Cup group highly enough. Especially my House-mates in Ravenclaw! They are the third online community I've ever found that I've felt so close to. (#1: Readerville in high school, #2: LiveJournal and Dreamwidth from high school to now, #3: Ravenclaws.)
6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Hilariously? Both big new fandom loves are series that started and finished in the mid-00s: Flashpoint, and Leverage. I watched the first season of Leverage when it came out, but never felt so connected to it until this year, when it's been the soothing end of my evening watching many, many nights. And CANON OT3!!!
Flashpoint is soothing TV for me in a different way: it's my therapeutic specialization, but in 1 hour episodes of cop drama in which I can trust that the Toronto police special response unit will sympathize and make connections with everyone in crisis, and do crisis response right. It's definitely a coping mechanism for the secondary trauma of, well, being a bb trauma therapist, but I find watching someone else go through the emotional hell this kind of work can be and getting it right very, very soothing.
7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
I was pretty bummed with Foxglove Summer, which I finally got around to reading. (Makes up for Broken Homes being my all-time favorite Rivers of London book, I guess?)
8. Your TV boyfriend(s) of the year?
Luke Cage, Greg Parker from Flashpoint, Kent Parson oh wait that's only TV in my mind. But Kent Parson is probably my #1 fandom boyfriend, for reals.
9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Rosa Diaz, Misty Knight, and Jules Callahan. I...might have a type? This feels like a type.
10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Possibly the Beauty and the Beast trailer? I have a crush on Emma Watson, okay? And Beauty and the Beast was a pretty formative fairy tale for me because BOOKS. (Alas, I seem to have committed myself to going to see it with my two conservative Christian friends to whom I'm not out, which is sad, because ALLLL the Emma Watson-as-Belle pantsfeels.)
11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Well, I keep finding myself reading old Harry/Draco fic even though that was not a ship I shipped when I was "in" Harry Potter fandom. But apparently I am nostalgic for Harry Potter.
12. The fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to?
We missed a bunch of good movies this past year, and still haven't seen Rogue 1 or Moana. And Hidden Figures comes out this week! I'm hoping to dive into showers and showers of beautiful Hidden Figures .gifs, and to get more female X-wing pilots. And maybe to have new Disney songs to sing.
13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Rivers of London: The Hanging Tree! The Netflix Marvel team-up! (which maaaaay even make up for the racist trash fire that Iron Fist looks like it's going to be)
