#3: What TV show can you quote the most? (for
skuf)
I am pretty sure this is Firefly: it has many, many iconic lines (at least one per episode), it is sort of a geek culture neural handshake. And while I haven't rewatched it in, um, at least six years, I still love it. I have really fond memories of watching it for the first time my freshman year of college, over my spring break, while visiting friends at Messiah College in PA. Singing along with the theme song was required. There's a strong association of being squished on the floor of a campus apartment, listening to everyone sing, having my first illegal alcohol (
ungelic_is_us made milkshakes with Thin Mints and creme de menthe, and very graciously put the tiiiiiiniest amount of alcohol in mine), discovering this lovely new world.
#15: Hardback, paperback, or e-books? (for
likeadeuce)
Ahhh, good question. When I was a kid, I was totally enamored of hardback books, and thought the pinnacle of luxury would be replacing all my paperbacks with hardbacks. They were sturdier, fancier, had interesting covers under the dust jackets, had dust jackets, and cost more. Clearly superior in every way!
But I was also the kid who took an entire backpack of books that weighed about half as much as I did on any family trip (it's a good thing we were too poor to fly anywhere), so by the time I was in high school or college, I had discovered that you could get more book per weight with paperbacks. They also took up less space, which is important because I refused (and still refuse) to buy a purse that couldn't at least hold a paperback (along with my wallet, keys, inhaler, and phone). In fact, my mother made me a special bag that coordinated with my dress for my senior prom so that it was large enough for Stardust, which was what I was reading at the time.
And then...I started thinking about e-books. I was resistant for a long period of time, because real books and what about our current publishing model?!. But I tentatively put a Kindle on some wish list, and a friend bought me us one for T. and my wedding, and I immediately appropriated it. I am probably not kidding when I say my Kindle saved my life when I was living in France for 5 months and T. and I were both cold all the time, bad at learning French, making no friends, and having independent but simultaneous major depressive episodes.
I had gone from a backpack full of books to a purse with a book to a purse with a whole library in it! Which is why I adore e-books. I know there is some evidence that people retain information better from paper books, and I certainly still get paper books from the library and Paperback Swap and Half-Price Books, but for traveling, there is absolutely nothing like having an e-reader. (And for living in Columbus half the week, too.)
Bonus Question from
likeadeuce: Also, I don't think I knew you were a hockey person. What's your team?
I got into hockey through
thefourthvine's foray into Hockey RPF. I always knew I would like the sport, because I tend to be attracted to fast-paced low-scoring sports with a dash of violence. But TFV posted a rec set of RPF, and because I will read anyth8ing TFV recs, I started poking around in hockey RPF. As a result of discovering friends most quickly amongst Blackhawks RPF fans, I'm a Blackhawks fan, and as a result of not discovering hockey until my hometown team was bought and moved to fucking Winnipeg, I am the Jets' #1 enemy. As a result of moving to Ohio, I am also a Columbus Blue Jackets fan (because LIVE HOCKEEEEEEY and the cannon and our pathetic playing). As a result of living in Dayton, I also love watching the Dayton Demolition/former Dayton Demonz, although omg minor league hockey fans are filthy misogynistic heterosexist douchebags. And as a result of loving hockey and loving female athletes, I'm a Boston Blades fan, a Buffalo Beauts fan (Meghan Duggan! my heart!), and a fan of any female college team within about 100 miles of Dayton. I'm a pathetic skater, but I'm hoping to get in shape enough to play on the "not really a team" portion of the Ohio State field hockey team in the spring.
