So during RN orientation I've been working all dayshift. Anyone who knows me can tell you how bad I hate day shift. The light pouring in the windows scalds my retinas and burns my skin. :o) My boss handed me a schedule the other day and said, "I've finally put you on night shift" so I was all happy to be alive and junk because the last day was actually a night. I guess I thought she meant it was permanent, so when the new schedule came out I was disappointed that I was shifting back todays again.
Probably the biggest disappointment was that I learned so much more on my one night shift than I did any of the dayshifts on the floor. Partly because all the bigwigs are up on the floor during the day, plus its busier because doctors are making rounds, dietitians, case workers, social workers, clergy, physical therapy, and other diurnal departments are busy getting their shit done on days.
The last schedule plus this schedule had me working Saturday night 7p-7a, off Sunday, and 7a-7p Monday. That sucked major ass since I worked off Sunday morning, slept until 6pm, got up, and needed to be back in bed at 10pm or thereabout to get enough sleep to have a decent Monday.
As it turns out, Mom and Joy were off last night and people ended up coming over at 2AM and making all sorts of noise while I was laying in bed trying desperately to go to sleep. Of course, a tour of the house was invevitable, so I got up and met everyone I was so pissed off at. Knowing I'd have trouble going to sleep, thus more trouble getting up today, I called LeeAnn at work and had her make a note to call me at 0530 this morning to be sure I was up.
Promptly at 0530 she called, but it was to inform me that all the orientees were being called off today since the census was low and there would only be 2 RNs for three of us to learn from. w00t w00t!
And now I can't go back to sleep!
Now I have to figure out why some of the people who came over haven't left. And also why our neighbor came pulling up at 6AM on our boat with some random woman, without suitable explanation. I think it's time to blast some Motown and wish everybody downstairs a very happy 6 AM!
