Just thought I'd share this. Reminding myself of this budgetary disaster helps calm the nerves after reviewing my own account balance- maybe it will do the same for some of you.
The monthly grant is $623.
Add to that $55 in food stamps. That's $678.
But $8,136 per year doesn't go very far…
Outreach in Burnside (where I work) helps people manage their money. We charge a monthly fee of $30-which is less than what we're legally allowed to assess-and that leaves $648.
Rent for an SRO (single resident occupancy apartment, usually about half the size of a typical hotel room with a community bathroom) is $350 to have a safe place to sleep and live. That leaves $298.
Phone charges are $14 to keep connected with the outside world. That leaves $285.
Co-payments for medications are $8. That leaves $277.
Getting around requires a Trimet honored citizen monthly pass at $23. That leaves $254.
Keeping surroundings clean is a challenge with disabilities. An hour of cleaning at $9 is a huge bargain. That leaves $245.
You will need to keep busy and occupied at home; the cable bill is $65. That leaves $180.
Out of that amount--$180 per month, or six dollars per day-you would need to budget for toilet paper and laundry soap. Shampoo. Soap. Fresh fruits. Soft drinks. Cigarettes. More cigarettes.
