My cousin went into labor on Sunday. She was only 34 weeks pregnant. The baby, Michael J, was born on Monday at about noon. He was 3 lbs 13 oz. and 18 inches long.
My poor cousin Amy had a hellish labor. Since her body wasn't ready to deliver yet, her pelvis wasn't flexible, so the baby couldn't get out. On top of that the baby was face up and her hip bones are tilted funny. Her normal OB was in surgery, so she had someone else. This OB said she wasn't pushing hard enough, so she turned off her epidural. Then she tried using forceps which didn't work. Amy was in so much pain, and her husband was being so great. Then her OB came in and kicked the other doctor out, and turned her epidural back on. Then they did a vacuum delivery. They had to intubate the baby, since he wasn't breathing on his own. Then Baby and Mom had to be transferred to a different hospital, as the one they were in wasn't equipped for such a sick baby. So he's in the NICU now.
The only other thing that needs to go behind the cut is that the NICU staff decided that he was doing so great on the ventilator that they tried taking him off of it while Amy was standing right there. Michael J did NOT start breathing on his own and they had to bag him and re-intubate him. Amy freaked.
The baby is still on a ventilator, but is slowly getting better. He is up to 4 lbs. Amy has been able to hold him a couple times and change his diaper. The biggest concern is whether or not the baby inherited Amy's Myotonic dystrophy. Which may be why he needs a ventilator. He muscles just don't have the strength to have him breathe.
