Burn Notice 2.01

I'd heard some rumblings that the season premiere of Burn Notice would be less than optimal. Some even called it slow. Some said there wasn't a pay-off for the great cliffhanger at the end of last season. All in all, I was a little trepidatious when I hit the play button.

While I do agree it wasn't the best episode ever, I disagree on the pay-off point. Certainly they are not going to give up all the secrets in the first episode of the second season! I'm expecting a a long slow build-up. We already know Helfer worked in multiple episodes, with reports I've seen ranging from 5 to 7, so I expect the whole first half of the season to be working up to a big mid season pay-off. That's okay with me, you can't say that the series arc moved quickly last season, so as far as I'm concerned it's business as usual in Miami. :) Plus, I think this is an episode that plays better on repeat viewings.

Well, except for a little bit of character awkwardness, possibly more due to writing or directing. Brucey baby feels like he's pushing a little too hard and Jeff isn't pushing enough. Oh, and that Aussie accent! I hope that won't be a recurring guest. And I'm disappointed that Fi has decided Michael isn't worth the heartache anymore. :( She was making such great inroads! I know eventually things will heat up again but the flirting was so much fun. Probably no more flirting though -- they're both too professional to pick at the scabs. They're also both too good at cutting their losses.

Oh, and I don't know if it's makeup or a slight weight gain, but Gabrielle Anwar's face seems a bit softer, not as tanned leathery as it seemed last season. Still tanned, of course. I'm leaning more towards the makeup, because Jeff's face looked just a little bit fuller too.
