"Ah, there you are...Captain," Douglas said as Martin entered, distain resounding in the last word. "I was beginning to wonder if you'd opted for a different flight home, just to avoid me."
"No, no... I just needed some time to think," Martin mumbled before he was interrupted.
"Think of a way to get out of this mess, you mean? Now you realise you're stuck in a marriage with a worn-out, old ex-drunk?" Douglas virtually spat. Perhaps that 'not in my right mind' comment had hit a little too close to home, Douglas realised, as he found he didn't have to do too much acting to seem hurt.
"No, Dougla-"
"Well, I'm not sure it can be annulled after last night," Douglas interupted again. "Technically it was consummated, so..."
"I'm not asking for an annulment... At least not yet," Martin said sliding into the Captain's chair.
Douglas had opened his mouth to snap at Martin again when the meaning of his words sank in. He paused for a moment, his mouth uncharacteristically agape.
"You're not?"
"No," Martin said, picking up the flight plan and purposefully ignoring Douglas' eyes.
Douglas noted the pink staining the top of Martin's sharp cheekbones, and recovered quickly. "You're not going to beg and plead with me to deny you spent a significant part of last night bent over numerous items of tacky, leopard skin furniture wailing, 'Faster, Douglas! Harder!' so you can get it annulled?"
Douglas was especially pleased to see the light pink on Martin's pale cheeks turn to a rather shocking red.
"Oh, God... I don't remember that," Martin whimpered.
"Or even proposing to me, apparently."
"I proposed to you? Oh, yes, I supposed I would have," Martin said glancing quickly at Douglas, his cheeks still a deep pink.
Douglas was now completely thrown. "And why would you suppose that?"
"Well, Arthur pointed out to me why you're a good match for me. We get on... most of the time, you're my best friend... You are my best friend, aren't you Douglas?" Douglas nodded silently and Martin let a small smile form before he continued. "You do look after me; I never knew you slipped money into my wallet when in was short of cash."
"Ah, Arthur was not supposed to tell you that."
"I know, which means you did it purely because you cared about me... And I guess I just never thought to look at you that way until now."
There was a few moments silence before a wide-eyed Douglas responded. "And now?"
"And now I've been doing some thinking and...Well, you know, that uniform does look rather good on you..." Martin said with a small smile that held a hint of flirtation.
"Look," Martin said more seriously, before Douglas could gather his wits. "I'm sorry about this morning, that must have been awful for you, but I honestly don't remember it, so I'm just going to need a little time to see if I can adapt to the idea of being married to you... Is that okay?"
This, Douglas realised was the moment he should say, 'Ha, fooled you!' or if he was a better man, 'I'm sorry, Martin, but I've played the most awful trick on you.'
Douglas, however, wasn't a better man, or even a mildly good one, and with the real possibility of having Martin for himself dangled before him, he didn't hesitate long before answering, "Of course, Martin. I can't pretend I'm not hurt, but I care enough to give you the time you need."
"Thank you, Douglas.... Umm, I'd better go and do the walk around."
Douglas flopped back into his seat, mind racing. A moment later Arthur heard a "Arthur, get in here!"
"Hi Dougals, want an early coffee?"
"Err, no. Yes. Also, you know how I said Martin and I weren't married yesterday? Well, we are."
"But you said-"
"Never mind what I said, I was just joking."
"Oh, hahahhaaa... I don't get it, Douglas."
