blah blah blah

Has anybody noticed the strong similarity between the Decemberists and Jethro Tull? The former do not have a flautist, but they've sure got the "long, convoluted narrative songs with flourishes" thing down.

Speaking of Jethro Tull, I still really, really want to see a Buffy vid of the Potentials set to "Broadsword." People, it's PERFECT:

I see a dark sail on the horizon set under a black
cloud that hides the sun.

Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding.
Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.

Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding.
Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman.
Bless with a hard heart those who surround me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind. Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on for the motherland.

I got the Decemberists' The Crane Wife (which I see isn't even really that new anymore) in a batch of CDs from BMG that I ordered while they were doing $5.99 CDs with free shipping. It's okay, but I think John may be right: not spectacular. It's definitely no Castaways and Cutouts. I love me some greatest hits of Berlin, though.

I also may soon be receiving a free CD from a Boston-based group, The Grownup Noise. I'm pretty sure that someone on my flist linked to them, although I can't remember who--I was instantly taken by "Vampire Love Song"; I actually set it to my profile song on MySpace, and then yesterday I got a message from a band member asking if we'd met at a show or something and offering the aforementioned free CD. So check them out, they're cool.

I also think the whole "We're a band, please take our CD!" thing is a lovely demonstration of how technology is changing the whole music business model, but that's kind of old hat anyway, I know.

My new Polar heart rate monitor should have arrived by the time I get home today. My Sigma Sport wrist display shorted out on Monday exactly the way the last one did, and although they did replace it for free, I can only assume that a new replacement would just do the same thing in another four months or so, and it took AGES to get the first one. Anyway, this way I also get a new strap, which I ordered in XS, because despite its being elastic, I had to tie a big knot in my old one to make it tight enough to register my heart beat, so that I appeared to have some kind of horrible growth beneath my armpit under my workout tops. Not awesome.

My back hurts. I hope bee_stung and I can get down to San Jose for student massages soon.
