a prince among landlords
So I had to pay rent on my old apartment through January 15, which is when the girl who I found to take over the lease was moving in. We had agreed that he would take the extra rent I agreed to pay on her behalf out of my security deposit and then send the rest back to me.
Yesterday, four days after the lease transfer was effective, I got the check in the mail. God, I miss Bruce desperately already.
He was a wonderful landlord. If anything needed attention, I would call him, and it would be taken care of within 24 hours, except once when he was on vacation. He did repairs on the property even after I'd committed to another year's lease, like fixing my living room floor and replacing both the floor AND ceiling in the kitchen. He also never gave me hysterical lectures about not putting nails in his walls, because although he did not leave it to fall down at its own pace, he did understand that he was renting a converted house in the student ghetto.
Some property owners don't seem to get that.
Anyway, if you live in Madison and are looking for a place relatively close to downtown, you should really consider renting from SRM Properties, which is Bruce. He's awesome, and he has ruined me for other landlords.
My current apartment, where I have to pay for heat, reminds me of nothing so much as the condemned firehouse in Ghostbusters. It has a few little nice touches, like the French doors between the bedroom and the living room, and it'll be tolerable for 5 months (providing I don't freeze to death), but god, I miss Bruce and my old place where no one had decided that dark grey was vastly preferable to a PERFECTLY INOFFENSIVE PALE TURQUOISE and assaulted the kitchen. Jeebus.
