the yoko effect

Jul 14, 2005 10:28

So last night I went outside at about 1:15, when I reached prelim studying saturation, to put some junk out on the curb for trash pick-up that I'd forgotten about earlier. The girl from upstairs was sitting on the porch with some guy--if it's her roommate/boyfriend, he's cut off his mohawk, and considering that she's leaving for Japan and I used ( Read more... )

Poor Yoko. I get the feeling that I'm the only person on the planet who not only likes her, but also thinks that she's a brilliant artist. Again, poor, poor Yoko.

That said, I still call Chantal Kreviazuk the Yoko of Our Lady Peace. But she didn't break them up, she just made them suck.

I haven't heard/seen much of her stuff, but I think I like her.

As for the general concept of "a Yoko," I think it's so culturally mainstream that it doesn't matter if you subscribe to the corresponding version of events or not; it's still an evocative concept.

I know that when I say this, I may be stepping on pins and needles
But I don't like all these people slagging her for breakin' up the Beatles
Don't blame it on Yokie!

"Be My Yoko Ono" by the Barenaked Ladies says it all.

Hey, I certainly don't blame Yoko. And I like the BNL song. :-)

I love Yoko. Her songs are really interesting. And it is so evident in John's work from that time period that he was madly in love with her. Who are we to speculate about a) John and Yoko's relationship and b) John's relationship with his fellow Beatles? I'm sure that guy knows nothing about Yoko except that she was John's girlfriend.

This reminds me, did you ever see the episode of "Mad About You" (disliked that show, but liked this particular episode) where Yoko hired Paul to film the wind? It was great. :)

Yeah, I agree that it's obvious that they loved each other, and in general I think the anti-Yoko sentiment is rooted in some pretty sexist stuff.

And no, I haven't seen that--I think I've only seen one or two eps of Mad About You.

One of the nice things about online communication is that, when I want to use a word but am not 100% certain that it a) is spelled correctly and b) really means what I think it means, I can look it up on dictionary.com.

Point a was really the only problem I had with insouciant, but it was still nice to be able to check it. :p

John wrote some of the best music of his career after he left The Beatles, so if Yoko did break them up then she did the music world a favour.

I don't believe that it was Yoko's fault. And I don't believe that their relationship was a major deciding factor. John Lennon was something really special and Paul McCartney's style and The Beatles were holding him back. John was obviously the most talented one. I mean come on... John and Yoko made Double Fantasy Paul and Linda formed Wings. *shudder*

I may be a little biased though. I hate Paul McCartney.

Wow, I never knew this about you.

I don't think I have feelings about Paul McCartney one way or the other. I do like Paul Simon. :p

Never knew that I hated Paul McCartney? Well you know, I can't help it. He's a tool. :p

And I know you like Paul Simon. You sent me a song of his once. His best song is Kodachrome though. :D
