exotic yet approachable

Fun times at Wal-Mart with _becquerel_. She was nice enough to take me even though she was totally freaking starving, and then she even shared her french fries. Of course, it was air-conditioned, which I think she appreciated, too.

I specifically needed popsicle molds, highlighters, a fan, and some kind of patch for my cute red/black sundress with the white embroidery, which has a little hole in the side/front of the skirt, near the bottom so at least it wasn't exposing anything obscene, but I don't know what caused it and I need to patch it before I wash it again.

The patch selection left something to be desired. I ended up with a lacy white butterfly that was bigger than I wanted because I couldn't find anything small that wouldn't clash horribly with the color scheme of the dress. Really, I'd like something darker, too--I may cruise eBay. It was only $.98, so I figured I might as well bring it home and see how it looked with the dress, but yeah, I think eBay bears investigating.

_becquerel_ kept snickering and exhorting me to get a giant American eagle or a pair of hearts pierced by an arrow, until she realized that it was actually a nice article of clothing and not just some pants or something. Normally, I am all about the tacky, but this dress is actually kind of classy.

There were no popsicle molds. The Wal-Mart employee I asked about it was as mystified as me, and said they must have them SOMEWHERE but just be out of stock currently.

Like with all the good fans. They had a bunch on display, turned on so you could feel them and try the different settings and stuff, and each time I found myself standing in front of a POWERFUL one, I'd look down at: empty shelves. I guess it is the second really hot day of summer. Not a great time to go fan shopping.

I ended up getting the smaller version of the really good big one that was out, though, and it's quite powerful, especially for its size. _becquerel_ and I each got one of those short window units, too. At least they were pretty cheap, and now I can keep my other oscillating fan in the bedroom.

I also stockpiled some toiletries and kitty litter (35 pounds for the price of 30!), and ended up buying a pair of earrings with little plastic stars on long silver chains because they SO matched my hair. Each earring has a green star and a pink one, so okay, mostly it's the pink one that matches, but they will be awesome for karaoke. And I got some pink nail polish that should match my flamenco dress perfectly.

In the self check-out line (I kept "skip bagging" on the fans, because they were BIG and I wanted to put them directly into the cart, and then the machine got all snippy with me and wanted customer assistance because it totally thought I was making a get-away), some guy behind us started extravagently complimenting my hair, and saying that more people should "be unique," and telling his wife, who didn't seem to speak very good English, that SHE should do her hair like that, and saying that HE'D do HIS hair like that if he were a motorcycle racer and could take his helmet off on TV.*

This is especially funny because when we stopped for gas on the way home, a woman in the parking lot VERY enthusiastically complimented my hair, and raved that she works for [L'Oreal? Estee Lauder? I forget] and she's SO TIRED of women always doing "boring old brown"!

_becquerel_ said, "You sure get a lot of attention."

As travspence has remarked in the past, I am exotic yet approachable.

I was sort of surprised when we emerged from Wal-Mart that it had not gotten really appreciably cooler, just darker. I had cereal for dinner because I couldn't bear the thought of cooking, although I REALLY need to do some dishes. At least I've got my fans set up and I'm drinking limeade. Ah, summer: that time of year when I have to pee ALL THE TIME.

*No, seriously, that's what he said.
