come back, springtime

I just dropped $400 registering for two conferences for the summer. It's not actually as bad as it sounds, as one of those registrations ($235) covers five days' worth of accomodations and food. Plus my friend Teddy from the department is going, too, so I was able to put her down as my preferred roommate (that's the rate for a student double occupancy). I'm presenting at both of them, I believe. Of course, I still have to make travel arrangements for one conference--I should check plane ticket prices for a round trip to Boston. The other one, thankfully, is here in Madison.

And then I ordered another obscure folk music CD: Sharper Than the Thorn by Brian Peters.

It includes versions of "Henry Martin," "Kemp Owyne," AND "Riddles Wisely Expounded" (and it's the version with the strange overlap with versions of "The Cruel Sister"). The Child ballad addiction persists. Earlier this week, I got The Wheel of the Year, a compilation of the Armstrong Family, out of the library; the version of "Wind and Rain" is all right, but I really hit the jackpot with THEIR version of "Riddles Wisely Expounded" ("Lay the Bent," same as Brian Peters) and a ghost song ("Ghost of John") and one that warns young women against loose morals ("Reynardine"). There's some other good stuff on there, too. Sweet.

My new phone from Verizon is supposed to arrive on Monday. As belleweather and caernsmith can attest, I am very excited about this. It's a flip phone! With a camera! And with my new Verizon plan, I can use it in Missouri, no roaming! I may have to cancel my scheduled meeting on Monday, though; I don't know when FedEx will deliver. At least I'm not dealing with UPS, the fucks.

Am apparently FINALLY on the fencing club email list; I got a message about people going to the Madison Fencing Academy tonight (no fencing club this week on account of finals), so I'm catching a ride with them. I had to do laundry so that I had appropriate pants clean. I went down about 3 pm and the washer and dryer were both in use, demonstrating that no good can come of deviating from my tight laundry schedule (every other Saturday). However, when I skulked back down 15 minutes later, no one was there and the washer was done, so I put their wet clothes in their little hamper, conveniently left down there, and put in a load of my own. Two hours later, I've taken their dryer load out as well and there's no sign that anyone has been down there since. I went ahead and did another load of my own--I'm trying to shrink some of my jeans. I think I may take the rest of my laundry to my parents' house next week.

...Hey, I think the person doing laundry in our basement actually lives next door, based on the guy hauling a laundry hamper of clothes up onto the porch over there. Same ownership, and the basement has an outside entrance, but no one ever mentioned this to me. Huh.

It's 46 degrees outside, but the heat is on and it's so hot in my apartment that I'm wearing shorts and I still had to open a window. The rain is blah. Dammit, come back, springtime!
