Buying shares

Jan 08, 2010 17:36

Partly as a response to the potential bids for Cadbury (and the fact that cally_tmk had bought shares in them so at least she could say "No" to a takeover, however ineffectual that no might be) I've been looking into ways to buy shares.

Things what I have learned )

Unfortunately, we probably won't be going to Shoreham on account of doing too many other things February and March (plan for 2010 is to try and have some weekends where we don't go places as we have lots of stuff we need to do to the house (like replace the roof, for example!)

...have fond memories of Glastonwick though, and I drink my homebrew from a Glastonwick pint glass!

... and in response to your other point, yes, it's interesting how the concept of the joint stock company as a structured way for individuals to band together to achieve something they couldn't do individually has become "just an investment" - a situation where large companies are now very distant from their (large number of) owners, who themselves pay less attention to the goings-on of the company than would shareholders in a smaller company. On the other hand, it wasn't unknown for small companies in ages past to persuade people to invest their savings (in a surefire railway or mining proposal) and then squander them, so nostalgia is not the answer!

Yeah....All sounds about right. I've done a little share dealing. Mainly as a late teen with the privatisation of a couple of things. Made enough to offset the loss of my first mini (£500ish) from what i recall.

Also lost on buying some tech stocks....Was an ebay alternative that i can't even recall the name.

Basic principle is never use money you can't afford to loose !
