Today will be a dull dull day. No co-workers either due to scheduled time off or addictions to drugs (long story.) No system, locked out after payrolls and technical errors (damn, hope I get paid.) Which leaves me with…LJ!
It’s threatening to storm outside. All blustery and dark, and I mean Daaarrrrkkk….Spooky!Dark! I want to shut down some lights and tell ghost stories!
Speaking of ghost-like stories, I finished reading Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Um.
It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the story, I did, I mean it’s like teenage angst vampire crack!fic. It’s a bit like The O.C. with vampires…and rain.
As a book though? It was very repetitive. Yes, he’s a vampire. Yes, he’s astoundingly pretty. OMFG, he SPARKLES, dammit! Lay off on the descriptive phrases of Edward’s immortal beauty and allow me some character insight, would ya? On anybody! It annoyed me to no end to be allowed so many phrases extolling on the wonders of Edward’s physical looks and not have but a sentence or two in telling us the “why” of anything he does. It’s not just him either, there’s not much insight into Bella or Charlie or Esme and Carlos (is that even his name, I’ve already forgotten.) Bella's attraction is shallow at best and Edward's is instinctive, so what tug is there for them to go through all the hell? Truly, the most mesmerizing of the vampires was Alice (Psychic!Vampire, "I am going to suck your blood, sometime in the future..I've seen it!") and I want her to have her own story. I’d rather have read that one.
Considering it’s a first novel, it’s not without its praises. Obviously the author has some talent at descriptive writing or I wouldn’t have been so annoyed by her…um….focus? The dialogue is pretty well done too. Character depth is way off, but I don’t think it’s necessarily that there isn’t any. It’s almost as if she assumed we would know them already, or would want to “skip that part.” The background work is there and it’s trickled in throughout the book in the tiniest scraps of information so she definitely put thought into their creation.
*shrugs* I’ll still read New Moon. I learned from Inkheart/Inkspell that just because I don’t like the first book so much, doesn’t necessarily mean I won’t love the second.
If anything, I’ve learned that I probably won’t be falling in love with a vampire anytime soon. The repeated descriptions of how frickin COLD Edward was really put me off my little fantasy. Kissing cold lips and having cold hands touch all the touchy zones? All that reminds me of is that 3am trip to the toilet in the middle of January. Cold is not sexy, okay?
LJ is so dead lately. It’s a bit sad. Shall I slap you all around, wake you up? Hypnotize you into responding? *pulls out shiny object and dangles like a pendulum* Like moths to a flame, sheep to the meme, you will answer me this:
