Movie Review
Tonight was supposed to be Chick Flick night with Amy. We had planned to see Enchanted, but the 7pm show was canceled for some reason. Plan B was put into action and we purchased tickets to see The Great Debaters. I guess it was a sneak preview for AMEX holders, and we both had AMEX cards.
I have only one word ... WOW!!! This is one of the best films I've seen. If Denzel does not win best actor AND best director I'll be very disappointed. And Nate Parker was AMAZING in his portrayal of Henry Lowe. The film made us laugh and cry. I was angry and embarrassed by the actions of my ancestors and PROUD of those who stood up to them to change the world for the better. I can't recall a film, since seeing Karate Kid in the theater many moons ago, where the audience applauded and stood in an ovation when the credits rolled.
It was a unique situation for us to see this film, as we were probably 2 of possibly 20 white people in the theater. There were points in the film where I wanted to stand up and apologize for my race. We were among the first to cheer when ignorance and arrogance were put in their place. And I wept openly at the scenes where that same ignorance that was so vividly reenacted. I wish I could say that it was Hollywood dramatizing the past for ratings, but sadly I know these things actually occurred. Even more sad is the fact that it still happens.
I can't recommend this film enough. See it.
