Smart Police in 'liquid bomb 'plot?

On 10 August, 2006 newservices announced UK police had busted a plot to bomb UK planes to US.

On 10 August, 2006 newservices announced UK police had so badly bungled the Daminola Taylor murder investigation that it took 6 years for the legal system to convict the murderers.

Do these two statements seem somehow contradictory of the UK police's competence?

Because in every newsservice that has covered this story the one thing that catches my eye is that the 'terrorists' are said to to have 'planned' to bomb several planes and are said to have 'planned' to to use a 'liquid bomb'. I have not read or heard of one news story where the police have produced a 'liquid bomb', or the chemicals to make it, as evidence.

I don't doubt for one moment that there are many angry muslims who talk about militant action and even talk about thier 'plans'. I 'plan' to win the lottery. On the strength of my 'plans' surely my bank can follow the goverment's example and take my 'plans' as a serious and real force in the world and loan me the cash to buy that new porsch? Or am I just being silly?

This reminds me of the Birmingham Pub bombs episode. 6 men were arrested for it, jailed and later released because there was "insufficient evidence" to convict. It was a spin job by the UK goverment to put Irish republibcanism in a bad light. One wonders if, in years to come, the same will be revealed of all these 'islamic attacks' on the west.

Investigation into the Birmingham Pub bombs has never been satisfactory. Especially the allegations that Special branch in colllusion with the UDA 'arranged' for radicals to have in thier possession explosives and 'directions' from the IRA. Is it at all possible that the liquid bombs exist only in the mind if the UK security services's imagination?
