Canadians Plug Into DVD Club
By Craig Takeuchi

In a country as vast as ours, when you’re trying to bring together movie lovers, how do you get them all in one room? The Internet.

The nonprofit First Weekend Club, dedicated to the promotion of Canadian films, is starting an on-line DVD club. Similar to book clubbers, members watch DVDs of selected movies at home and then discuss them on a Web forum at www.firstweekendclub.ca/. Membership is free.

“Often a film is only going to come out in Vancouver or Toronto or a big city, and often people who really want to see them can’t because they live in a city where it’s not opening,” DVD Club moderator Katherine Brodsky said by phone. “Canadian films don’t tend to open too widely. So this was a way of including people.” Brodsky added that an on-line club is more convenient for people with busy schedules, and for those who don’t feel comfortable participating in in-person discussions.

Titles will be announced on the second Friday of each month, and special guests will respond to questions and comments at the end of the month.

The first title is Snow Cake, starring Sigourney Weaver and Carrie-Anne Moss. Cast members Emily Hampshire and Callum Keith Rennie will participate in the forum from May 2 to 9. The next title will be announced on May 9.
