Summary: Jensen has always been sick kid and Jared is always ending up in hospital for being too adventurous for his own good.

Jared woke the next morning with the sun shinning through the party opened blinds. It didn't take him long to work out that the sun would wake him up about 5 minutes before breakfast would arrive and his plan worked everyday. His yawn echoed through the quiet room and into an even quieter corridor. His stomach rumbling broke the silence. His eyes were tired and that when it hits him like a ten ton truck. He's not alone this morning. Mid way through the night a new patient had taken up residence in his once empty room. A boy who did not look sick and who shouldn't be here. He tried to get a glimpse of his new room mate but the curtain surrounding his bed made the task difficult. No wanting to disturb his sleeping friend with the noise of the television, he grabbed a comic of his dresser and laid back against his soft white pillows waiting for his breakfast to arrive. Hopefully it will be here soon he thought to himself.
After breakfast Jared buzzed a nurse who grabbed his crutches and helpd him from his bed and down the corridor to the toilet. The nurse waited outside the toilet door in case Jared slipped and fell. On the way back, Jared convinced the young nurse with a smile and his ever so charming manners to let him play games on the staff computer. She gave in because she understood that he must get awfully bored and lonely.
Jared returnd to him room and little after 11am. He found his new room mate staring blankly at his food. It's soggy toast, warm milk and cereal that looks out of date.
Jared stares at him smiling, "Me name's Jared. Do you wanna share my candy stash? I got plenty to go round."
"Um..sure...anythings gotta be better then this and me names Jensen." Jensen chuckled nervously.
Jensen made his way over to Jared's bed and Jared pulled out a container full of sweets. He couldn't believe his eyes. His momma and daddy would never let him have this much candy. The container was filled to the top with milk bottles, sour candy, chocolates, hard lollies, soft lollies, just plain lollies. Wow he thought.
Jensen and Jared sat there eating candy until they made themselves sick. Asking questions in turn.
"So why you here Jensen, you don't look sick and your bones don't look broken"
"Oh I got an infection called Golden Staff. How'd you break your leg Jared?
"Jumped outa tree. I was heaps high up and I jumped, landed weird and it went snap, crackle, pop" Jared begin laughing, thinking how he was going to try it again when he got home.
"So now I've got six weeks of an itchy and heavy leg." Jared said with a disappointing grunt.
"Looks like we'll be stuck here together. I got 6 weeks too."
With that last question the room filled with silence again. Both too full to eat anymore candy, Jared closed the lid while Jensen flicked through the movie folder.
"Hey Jared you wanna watch Home Alone 2?"
"Yeah ok" Jared said excited.
"Cool, Ill just buzz for the nurse."

Over the next week, Jensen and Jared's family got to know each other quite well. Jared's family learn't about Jensen's previous medical experience, how life can be difficult when owning a ranch and about the family. Jensen's family learn't how Jared's momma died in a car accident, how Jared is a very active kid and how life can be hard for a single father of three. Jensen and Jared were getting along fine. Better then fine really. It was like they knew each other from birth. They were like brothers. Even though there was a four year age gap it didn't really effect their relationship.
It wasn't long before they knew how to push each others buttons and what made each other tick. Jared found that if he insulted Johnny Cash then he would find himself ducking as various objects were been thrown in his direction. All it took for Jensen was to make a remark about how Santa Clause isn't real.Jensen would then find himself sitting in the room that was too quiet from Jared ignoring him. It never lasted long though because Jared would always start laughing at Jensen because it looked like he was about to burst into tears. They shared a bond that their best friends would be jealous of.
They spent every moment together. If one of them wanted to go for a walk then it was assumed that the other would automatically come with. If Jared's leg hurt to much to walk then Jensen would push him in a wheelchair. It was hilarious watching Jensen struggle as he helped Jared into the wheelchair. However, it was even funnier watching as Jensen pushed Jared while Jared held onto his IV drip and trying not to get the cords caught in the wheels.It was a weird setup but it worked for them. They visited the games room together, went for walks outside, to the cafeteria and would visit the nurse's station. After a minute of sweet-talking and smiles they would find themselves on the nurse's computer playing games. All the nurse's loved them and that suited the boys just fine, it got them a lot of special treatment other patients didn't get.
Jensen and Jared only ever fought once. It was stupid, over nothing and probably only happened because Jensen was tired and cranky. They were watching a movie and Jared was laughing at all the not funny moments and Jensen just couldn't stand it anymore.
"Do you ever shut up Jared? You're so annoying."
"You shut up Jensen, you're so stupid."
"Am not."
"Am too."
"Am not."
"Am too."
"Whatever dude, your the idiot that jumped out a tree and broke your leg."
"I hate you."
"I hate you, you suck."
"Dont talk to me ever again."
"Fine with me."
"Good."
"Good" Jensen spat out as he turned his back to Jared.
That was their first and only time they went to bed not saying goodnight. The next morning Jensen asked Jared if he wanted to watch Home Alone 3 and of course Jared said yes.
Hours rolled into days and before they knew it, they both had about a week before they could be discharged. Jared and Jensen both knew it but never said anything about it. It was like some unwritten rule or something. Neither one of them wanted to admit for the first time they would miss hospitals. They would miss each other.

It was early on monday morning that both boys learn't that today was going to be a bittersweet day for Jared. After 6 weeks of barely any physical activity besides their strolls around the hospital or toilet runs, Jared was told his cast was going to be removed this afternoon and then will be discharged.
Jensen pretended to be asleep when he heard the news. He did not want to think about it let alone hear it. His new best friend was going to move hours away from him. The bigger question was what would Jensen do with the remainder of time he had left. Who was he going to talk to about kid stuff and watch cartoons with. He'll be alone again when Jared goes. He''ll have no one to bludge candy off. This was the reason Jensen never liked making friends in hospital because in the end you go your separate ways and never see each other again.He would miss Jared a lot more then he cared to admit. They became like brothers.
They didn't speak much for the rest of the day both knowing the inevitable would happen eventually. They spent the day watching movies and taking each others presence and listening to the laughter whenever it filled the room. They were quite mature for their age and at times like this it showed.
Before they knew it Jared was being wheeled away to have his cast removed.

5.25pm was time that will be stuck in their minds for a while. That was the time when the boys hugged goodbye, each slipping a note into each others pockets.
After everyone said their goodbyes, Jensen's family headed outside to farewell Jared and his family. They all waved as Jared was driven out of the hospital car park.
Jensen pulled the note from his pocket and it simply stated 'Best friends for life', Jensen laughed as he realized that he wrote the exact same thing on Jared's note. Jensen was truely goin to miss Jared.
