Alcoholism is big with law enforcement. Do you drink? Alot? Are you an alcoholic? Why? What parts of the job are connected to it? Or is it all personal? Talk about it!
No, I'm not. I can't say I haven't come close, though.
I had a really rough case, that I don't really want to go into the details on, but let's just say we got the guy but at a cost. And hat case still haunts me in ways that I don't think I can really explain. I guess the best way to put it was that you never want your first big undercover case to end with one of your coworkers winding up dead.
So -- when it gets really bad, and I'm on my own -- I drink. I'm not saying that it's the best idea in the world, and sometimes I'll call my sister or other siblings to try and find some way of avoiding it, but sometimes -- there's not really anything anyone can say to make the nightmares stop. And yes, I see a shrink who specializes in law enforcement, but sometimes -- that doesn't really help either. And he's a jerk who doesn't like making house calls.
I guess it's a bit of a byproduct of my breeding. I was raised around alcohol: my parents would always have a glass of wine at dinner, all my friends drank in high school. I had my first glass of champagne at a wedding when I was fourteen. The key was always moderation, and I know that. I know how to moderate myself. There are just some days that moderation just isn't going to do that for me.
And sometimes -- it just helps me sleep, when sleep seems to be too much to ask for.
