“When cruelty is inflicted on innocent people, it discredits whatever cause.” - Ronald Reagan
It’s easy for any one of us to say that we treat every case the same, that we walk into each interrogation with the same open mind. The term ‘innocent until proven guilty’ is good in theory. And for most of us, I would say that 99% of the time in any given case we truly believe such. None of us are perfect though. And the public forgets that even those in our profession are only human.
We all have that one thing though. Some of us have more than one… something that reaches deep inside and tears us up a little more than on a normal day in a normal case.
For me, this is children. Defenseless children that are dealt a cruel hand in their lives. I go into these cases angry and my emotions run high. It becomes a personal vendetta to put the culprit(s) behind bars. It’s quite out of character for me as I usually remain so detached. I’ll consider the flaw a work in progress as the words ‘I can’t help it’ are no excuse.
