Just finished watching Doctor Who, "The Zygon Invasion". As usual, here's some random thoughts in no particular order.
* Writer Peter Harness specializes in "I can't believe they went there", apparently. Last year, "Kill the Moon" stirred up a lot of debate about whether the story was an abortion metaphor and whether people ought to find that offensive. (Also, the Moon is an Egg.) This time, the story's much more overtly political - no question whether this one's about real-world issues, or where the author stands. I think I like it - I think it's neat that DW is willing to attempt something that daring, and I think they're overall doing a good job of handling sensitive topics. But I'm kind of scared to go look at Gallifrey Base right now. I can already hear the squabbling from here.
* Man, the Best Peace Treaty Ever didn't last long, did it?
* Osgood. Osgood Osgood Osgood. I love her so much. I love that they brought her back in a way that makes sense (well, DW-sense) and doesn't just undo what happened in her last appearance. I love her cosplay and her courage and her relationship with Osgood. I know it's really unlikely that Ingrid Oliver will ever be a full-time companion, but poor Osgood deserves at least one good Tardis trip. Make it happen, Steven.
* What's Osgood's first name? She needs a first name. There are too many Ozzes around here.
* Good handling of series continuity, I thought. It should make sense for people who remember "Terror of the Zygons" in detail, and for people who don't even remember "Day of the Doctor".
* For a little while in the playground scene, I was convinced the Doctor was talking to the wrong little girls.
* Zygons are pretty awesome. Completely ridiculous looking, but awesome. I'm not crazy about their unpleasantly organic technology, but I guess it kind of works?
* I was all prepared to make a quip about Truth or Consequences being a place in New Mexico, then Clara beat me to it. Also, Clara is _exactly_ the kind of person who would cheat at Trivial Pursuit, isn't she?
* Kind of wish we had an in-story reason for the Doctor to fly to Whatsit-istan instead of taking the Tardis.
Overall, really enjoyed the episode. Hope that next week's is as good.
