HUGHSON - A freight train hit a woman walking along the railroad tracks this morning, killing her, authorities said. The area bordered by Seventh Street, East Whitmore Avenue, Tully Road and Santa Fe Drive was closed for more than three hours after the 9:46 a.m. accident as detectives examined evidence.
According to witnesses, the woman was walking west on Santa Fe and talking on a cellular phone, and the train was heading north toward Empire.
Nearby drivers saw the approaching train and honked and yelled at the woman, Stanislaus County sheriff's deputy Jason Woodman said, but she kept walking over the tracks. The sheriff's department is investigating the death as a possible suicide.
