on the line
400 words. prompt: phone (jaebum/wooyoung)
“Hi, hyung.”
“Wooyoung-ah!”
“How are you?”
“I’m good. How are you?”
“Good.”
“…”
“I miss you.”
Laughter. “Yeah, I miss you too.”
(Wooyoung wishes he could hold that laughter in his hands, could put it in his pocket and keep it with him always.)
“Well, uh, I’m a little busy right now. I’ve gotta go. But I’ll talk to you later, alright?”
He nods.
“Okay, good. Stay out of trouble, yeah?”
“I will, hyung.”
“Good.”
The dial tone fills the room and buzzes in Wooyoung’s head for hours.
The thing is, Wooyoung has never made the first move. Call it fear, call it insecurity, call it whatever you will. Wooyoung thinks he would just rather the other person come to him. It calms him down, the illusion of control.
But with Jaebum, nothing is off limits.
(When broken dreams and oceans and worlds separate you from the one you love, anything that will erase the emptiness that hollow words and static bring is worth trying.)
“Hyung, I miss you.”
“Wooyoung?” His voice is exactly the way it has always been. (It’s warm and inviting and full of promise. It’s home.)
“I’m here.”
“Good to know. So what’s going on?”
“Nothing. I just wanted to hear your voice.”
Jay’s laugh is unsure. “Oh. Well I’m talking now. What did you want to hear?”
Wooyoung’s heart races and his breaths quicken. (He feels as though he’s on the precipice of a great something. An unknown that fills him up, while the fear it brings drains him completely.)
Wooyoung feels nauseous. “I… I just…” The words rip into him, slashing across his heart. (It’s now or never, and Wooyoung is paralyzed. Now is here much too soon, and never feels as if it’s following close behind.)
Muffled voices break through the silence. They don’t sound like people, just white noise. Wooyoung hears Jaebum’s voice saying something to them, but it’s an unfamiliar sound. (The tone of it is the same, but the syllables are all wrong. The sounds are out of rhythm, and suddenly Wooyoung feels out of sync.)
“Wooyoung-ah, I’ve gotta go. But I’ll call you again soon, okay?”
“…”
“Wooyoung-ah? Are you still there?”
“Yeah, I’m still here.”
(And he is. He always has been.)
“Good. I’ll talk to you later.” Wooyoung can hear the smile in his voice.
“Okay. Goodbye.”
“See you soon.”
(The line goes dead.)
“I hope so," Wooyoung whispers.
