I now have a working gadget with two MAX232 chips on it, connected to a 9-pin D-connector. The Flash programming tool, FlashMagic, runs and flashes the LEDs, then exits. It's a start, but not much of one. Next step: get the ARM chip powered up and connected to the MAX232s.
Meanwhile, at the boot sale, I acquired two Super Nintendo controllers, a PCI network card and a bar-code scanner. I've also made a fair stab at tidying up the back garden.
But today, I completely lost it by heading over to the shop without taking any money with me. Didn't realise until I got to the till. Darnit.
