Arduino SID Failure

May 12, 2009 21:13

Yesterday, I blew up a SID chip. Not just any old chip, but a 1982-vintage, irreplaceable, interesting sound generator chip. And I feel like crap for so doing. I knew it was CMOS and prone to failure by latch-up, but I failed to be careful enough and just as I got the camera ready, it made a loud crack and let out the magic smoke.

You can't see it it the photo, but the breadboard beneath the chip is melted. So now I have some working Arduino software that forms the basis of an API for the SID, but I've blown the chip up. I do actually have another chip, but that's not really the point. I can't face it right now, so I'll have to come back to it another day.

So much for an antidote to frustration.
