First day in gainful employment

Feb 09, 2009 21:10

Started the job today. Got nothing much done, 'cos the network ports in my cell cubicle aren't working yet. I did get fitted with the usual ball and chain ID badge, though. In fact, we had three new starters on one day, which isn't bad for a recession, I suppose.

DorkSnow in London was an excellent two days of Arduino, RFID, Atari Punk Console, theremin and soldering mayhem in Limehouse Town Hall. Said Town Hall was a fantastic piece of faded grandeur, complete with high ceilings, balcony, ornate mouldings and magnificent staircase (no disabled access here!). It was so full of junk and decay that it could have passed for an UrbEx site, although it was intact enough to keep the snow out. The hotel was next to Limehouse DLR station and was almost brand new, quite pristine.

I have acquired a Canon camera remote control cable (the days of mechanical cable releases are long gone). I plan to chop it in half and fit connectors of my own choosing, so that I can trigger the camera electronically. I also have some DIL IC test clips which I want to make into clip-on in-circuit programming adaptors for AVR chips. I need to collect the stereo microscope and some LCDs from the Post Office, somehow. I'll soon have a vacuum fluorescent display from a cash till, which has a serial interface. Should be a fun thing to get going!
