A little while back, I was given a Compukit UK101, but I hadn't had much of a chance to fix it and get it running again. The main PSU capacitor, 4700uF, 16V, had started leaking, so I wasn't going to just plug it in and have it go BANG. But armed with a new 4700uF, 25V capacitor, today I set about fettling the machine into a workable state. Changing the capacitor was very easy, but I also wanted to clean off the cobwebs and grime that had accumulated. So, off with all the keytops and into the sink with some detergent.
The good news is that, once cleaned and reassembled, the machine worked first time! It's got a different version of the machine monitor ROM (equivalent to the BIOS nowadays) than my original UK101, so that'll need to be backed up somehow. But it's in such original condition that it will be well worth a proper restoration. Once that's done, I've spotted an exhibit space at the Bradley Stoke Library where I'd like to set up a small display. I'd better find out who's in charge of it and how to make a request.
