Prologue

"Aren't you going to give me some privacy?" Sho Sakurai suddenly closed the diary that he held and protectively placed it on his chest.

Satoshi Ohno, Sho's guardian angel and late cousin, rolled his eyes. "That's Uncle Shu's diary, not yours. Let me have a look!" He demanded with a pout.

Sho continued to hug the diary on his chest as if his life depended on it. He got up from the chair and stretched a protective arm to make sure that Satoshi won’t get near him.

“I just want to see that page, Sho. There’s no point in keeping it from me since you’ve been reading the whole page out loud I almost memorized that poem the other day by just listening to you,” Satoshi pointed it out for his cousin.

Sho sighed in defeat and flipped through the pages of his late father's diary.

Satoshi sat beside Sho and they both read in silence the words written on the browning pages of the late man's journal.

Sept. 15, 1999

Kohaku, Hawaii

The once lonely cherry tree
Blooms lovely now by the sea.
New branches suddenly grew
Brought color and life anew.

A new branch broke forth
And thus hea--- -------.
Henceforth cal--- - ------.
Forever -------- ------.

Part of the poem was smudged by spilled coffee and was unreadable.

Sho had no idea what it meant. All he knew was that it meant so much to his father. He remembered seeing his father read that particular page every night and how upset he was when he accidentally spilled coffee on the page.

It sounded like a mission that his father has to fulfill. He vowed to carry on what his father failed to finish.

But what baffled him further was the date his father wrote in that particular diary entry.

It was dated 10 years after his father died.
