So I was watching the hills tonight and you know how every show now a days tries to have "indie" type music played on their show? Well the song by Goldfrapp "No. 1" came on and i was like, "damn they've got good taste." I heard this song and artist almost a year ago and liked her/them from the start because it's chill music that kinda reminded me of imogen heap.
So back to the topic of "indie" music according to wikepedia indie is defined as:
In
popular music, indie music (from independent) is any of a number of genres, scenes, subcultures and stylistic and cultural attributes, characterised by perceived independence from commercial pop music and
mainstream culture and an autonomous, do-it-yourself (DIY) approach.
I would even classify underground hip-hop as indie as well.
The people who call themselves "scene" people or highly devoted indie music fans criticize the artists for jumping onto the major label bandwagon or even dislike people (pop culture) who start to enjoy the same music that they do. In my opinion you can't fault the artists for trying to make a decent living because the music industry is so cut throat you need to take advantage of every opportunity out there. And for pop culture liking their music that's awesome cause it's money in the bank for them.
It just starts another cycle for those music connoisseurs to find the next big "indie" artist to discover that will hopefully hit it big as well. I don't consider myself an indie connoisseur, but just say i'm ahead of the game reason being:
1. I love new music and anything that sounds good to my ear, but i get bored with music easily. If i find a song or artist i really like i'll listen for about 3-5 weeks straight constantly sometimes nothing else and eventually burn myself out of liking them. so i am constantly on the hunt for new and awesome music. this doesnt mean that i stop liking them, i'll listen to them every now and then but this time i've already moved on.
2. CONCERTS- live music does not compare to anything else. the intensity of a performance, the emotions of the crowd knowing every lyric to every song, and the devotion of the fans for being there as the same reasons as you does not compare to just listening to them in your car or at home.
concerts are also awesome when finding out about "indie" bands/musicians because if you are lucky enough you will catch live show for a cheap price. becuase their music is not well known they need to attract concert goers to see them and they're usually set at a decent price 5-20 bucks. eventually if they are discovered and signed to a major label the price of their live shows goes up drastically. Take for example jason mraz. rick and i saw him senior year of high school for free or less than 10 bucks, today his tix range from 30-60 i think depending on venue.
3. gratification- like anything else there is that certain gratification of hearing it first. just like getting those first pair of jeans, shoes, chargers jersey, or video game there's that satisfaction of being first.
now this does not come easy because you've got to do your homework to stay ahead of the game. you need to read reviews and preview the tracks yourself, which takes time. luckily with the craze of myspace almost every artist places their tracks on their pages for us to preview. for me i love sirius radio especially channel 26 "left of center" which is college, "indie," underground music, channel 30 the coffee house: acoustic coffee house setting music, and channel 35 chill channel.
well this was my rant about "indie" music and the same can be talked about with "indie movies" as well but that's can be talked about in another entry some day.
sean where you at? i think i've posted more times in the past 3 days than you have in the past month. i think you're the only person who reads this now since everyone probably doesn't know i'm back in the LJ game.
but if there are people out there who read this start an LJ and be my friend so i can read more blogs or even if you're part of another blog site send me the link cause i want to know about your thoughts as well.
