Chapter 6
“Ohayou!” I walked lethargically into the kitchen that morning, only to have an overly enthusiastic chibi greet me in a cheerful, slightly annoying voice. It was kind of like the person who speaks to you in an entirely too happy voice while you’re still trying to fully wake up. You just want to rip out that persons vocal chords and push them in a ditch.
I itched my eyes and then looked up at him,
“What the hell are you doing up? You’re going to make yourself sicker….”
I grumbled, grabbing a hold of his wrist and attempting to drag him back to bed.
“But I’m not sick anymore!” he protested, “Honest!”
I stopped walking and turned to look at him. I had to admit, he looked a lot better than he had earlier that week. The color had returned to his face, his eyes were bright and energized and his voice wasn’t dry and raspy anymore. He did indeed look as if he wasn’t sick, so I decided to leave him be.
“I’m going back to bed then…” I turned and went to leave, but this time he was the one grabbing me.
“Wait!” he called out, forcing me to come to a halt once more. As I turned once again to him, I saw something odd occur. He suddenly looked very shy and averted his gaze away from my own. And the weirdest thing was, I could have sworn that I had seen a rosy color rise in his cheeks. Was he blushing? Well, I hadn’t seen many people do that, so I wasn’t exactly sure. Either way, he was surely acting different today.
“You’re acting weird…” he jumped at my voice and I was sure that he was becoming redder by the second.
“I-It’s just that…” he trailed off sheepishly and I arched a brow at him.
“I-I...You took care of me.”
“And? Am I not allowed to be human?” he gave me a panicked look and I could tell by the way he shook his head that I’d misunderstood him.
“N-No!” he said, waving his hands and shaking his head vigorously. “I-I just thought that…you know….that you still hated me?”
A sting of guilt emitted from inside me as he sorrowfully spoke his assumptions, nervously fumbling with the bottom of his shirt. My sharp gaze softened a bit and I knew that I had to say it. I had to prove to him that he was wrong.
Hesitantly, I placed a hand on his shoulder and I could feel him tense and look back up at me questioningly.
“…I’ve never hated you…” I said, trying my best to sound reassuring, “I’m just not the kind of guy who lets people get close so easily….I guess…I guess being cold is how I protect myself.” I did the best I could to explain and for a moment, I thought everything I was saying was coming out like gibberish, but then he finally began to show some reaction. At first, it was one of surprise, then to one of understanding, and then he smiled one of the biggest smiles I had ever seen.
And then suddenly, I found Takanori’s arms around my torso, holding on tightly to me, as if I was his lifeline or something. I stood stiffly for a moment before I finally forced myself to relax and I hugged him back. “I love you, Akira-san.”
Just when I was finally beginning to calm, he said something that made me jerk back in surprise.
“W-Wha-“ he chuckled at my reaction,
“I don’t mean like that, dummy. I love you, and I…I really want to be friends with you.”
Friends? Why would Takanori want to be friends with a guy like me?
“Please…” He gave this big pair of puppy dog eyes and I stared into them silently for a moment, trying to see his true intentions; his deep dark intentions. But any bad thought there might have been was drowned out by joy and love. It was an unfamiliar look to me.
“It’s not that fun being my friend…”
“Still! I want to be friends with you!” he chirped, jumping up and down like a persistent school finally, I sighed and just as I was about to give in, the doorbell rang, startling the both of us. “Ah! I’ll get it!” he then turned and quickly scurried down the hall. A few seconds later, a loud scream echoed through the entire house and before I even thought, my feet were already going off down the hall and in a matter of seconds, I arrived in the living room, pointing my small hand pistol at the bastard who dared to disturb the peace in this house. I suppose it was instinct to react with a weapon, but I would rather be safe than sorry.
“A-Akira!” Takanori shrieked, “W-What are you-“
He seemed terrified, but soon I found the intruder chuckling.
“Don’t worry Taka, he won’t shoot me.”
“Would you like to retract that claim?” I asked in a low voice, cocking the gun.
“Well, no, seeing as the minute you pulled the trigger, I would stab you.” I looked down, only to find him holding a knife behind his back. He pressed it against my abdomen and my eyes narrowed.
“Guys, stop-“
“Try me.” I said, ignoring Takanori’s words.
“Let’s dance, Blondie.” I pulled the trigger and did a quick dodge to avoid a hit, but it seemed that instead of stabbing me like he’d said, he was merely trying to trick me into dodging, because I soon found a knife flying by my head and wedging itself into the wall. I looked at him and the most my bullet had done was ruin his hair tie, so his raven black hair came down over his shoulders.
“Nice dodge…” I said, prying the knife from the wall.
“Not too bad yourself, Blondie.” He grinned and straightened himself up before waltzing towards me. I reached out and we both shook hands,
“Level 3?” he asked,
“Nah, level 4. You?” I replied. His grin grew wider.
“Me too.”
Takanori looked back and forth at the two of us and I knew he was confused.
And in a way, I was as well.
“How did you know?” I asked. He walked to the wall where a small hole resided.
“I only know of one other person who has such a clear shot and I found it unlikely that you learned that from someone here on the streets. If I hadn’t dodged, I know for a fact that you would have definitely ended me.” I felt the urge to smile, but refused and merely handed him his knife back.
“Same here.”
He smiled and patted my shoulder.
“Um, what’s going on?” Takanori asked with a confused expression.
“Nothing. It’s a bounty hunter thing.” Said the raven haired man.
“So um…I made breakfast.” The chibi said awkwardly. The two of us nodded and followed after him. I trailed behind, looking at the back of that man suspiciously.
He didn’t seem bad; hell, he was in the organization. But still, I felt like there was something off about him.
