I don't know much about
Terrence Howard. I haven't seen Hustle and Flow but I did see Iron Man on Wed, which reminded me to add Hustle to my netflix queue. I wasn't all shippy over Stark/Rhodes, as I've seen others on my flist reacting to Stark's asking Rhodes to blow on his dice, or the close quarters they shared on the airplane to Afghanistan. I don't know what Howard's voice sounds like regularly but I wasn't expecting the high-pitched, somewhat effeminate lisp-hint.
Since Howard's a supporting character in the first of the summer blockbusters, I don't find his inclusion in entertainment news surprising-but I am creeped out. From imdb:
Howard Threatened to Kill Daughter's Sweetheart Actor Terrence Howard has proved his credentials as the ultimate over-protective father - he threatened to kill his daughter Aubrey's teenage boyfriend. The Iron Man star didn't appreciate his 14-year-old daughter dating a classmate he disapproves of, and "intervened" by forcing her to ditch the unfavorable suitor. He says, "She's supposedly in love with some guy. I made her break up with him and I've threatened to kill him. I was like, you picked a green fruit from the tree that's far from ripe." And Howard ensures he keeps a tight-leash on his beloved kids - warning Aubrey she will be cut out of any future inheritance if she is not "obedient". He tells his daughter, "I've set a lot of things aside for you, but those things are only yours as long as you're obedient to me." However, the actor has put a crafty plan into action to make sure the teenager doesn't fall back into her unsuitable relationship. He adds, "She's OK now. Though, I'm sure he's still kind of her boyfriend. This summer I'll take her off to another country where her phone won't work, and he'll start dating someone else." Howard has three children with his ex-wife Lori McCommas; Aubrey, 14, Hunter, 12, and Heavenly, 10.
That's not over-protective, it's pathologically controlling. Threatening to cut off inheritance is blackmail and shipping her off to another country is practically kidnapping. No wonder the mother of his kids is an ex.
I'm not saying his objections to the boyfriend are unfounded, he could be absolutely right: the boy is bad news and the kids are simply young and in lust. However, the situation implies, to me, that his kids are there because he wants people to control and be obedient, rather than beloved. Lack of discipline abounded while I grew up, but at least I was allowed to find my own path, as twisted as it turned out to be.
I find it surprising he'd readily admit to such parenting tactics in the age of Alec Baldwin-Kim Basinger and Charlie Sheen-Denise Richards criticism.
