Ok, total love for Couch Baron's recap of "Dead Man's Party," 3.2 of Buffy. I admit to not liking this episode overly much, but I never skipped it when I marathoned.
First of all, Couch Baron. He was my very first introduction to TWoP through Veronica Mars. Possibly his recaps color my perception of what I think a recap should be, which is why I'm so critical of others. I think he's one of the better ones overall, however. Imagine if I'd run into Jacob first! I never would've read more TWoP.
Second, seasons 2 and 3 were recapped nearly 4-5 years after they originally aired. They had the benefit of hindsight and knowing how low the show went. It had its good moments, but
adding Dawn ruined the whole dynamic of the group. I understand that shows can't remain the same without going stale but the steps the writers took to change them crapped on all the good they'd established earlier. Buffy's one of my prime examples of why shows shouldn't last more than three seasons.
What tickled me enough to open a new tab and post to LJ is Couch Baron's references to the commercials he's seeing. They recapped these episodes in 2002/2003, before they came out on DVD. They're relying on taped copies, which strikes me as hilarious in 2007. If they were going back to recap now, they'd have the DVDs.
I also can't help but remember my own taped copies. I seriously have 1997 lottery numbers popping up on my first season episodes.
