I started Buffy on season 1 the other day to entertain myself while cleaning. Not much cleaning got done, but I did get through the pilot. And it’s still so sad how much I can still quote along with computer-Willow and librarian-Giles.
But ever since I started, I’ve been thinking about “Anne” and I succumbed tonight to watching an ep out of order.
There are two things I love about this episode the most: the shot with SMG with the sickle in her hand, and Chanterelle/Lilly/Anne.
I remember watching the season opener senior year in college for season 3 and loving the new credits. Always the last shot of the credits on SMG are pretty well chosen, and the one of her with that whatever-weapon and the “Don’t fuck with me” expression on her face dropped my jaw when I first saw it.
I remember mom telling me about Joss Whedon’s favorite theme of young girls with weapons. Now it disturbs me to think about it on one level but I let it go because he gave us Buffy and River. The Serenity trailer shot of River when the doors open on her after her battle with the Reavers always struck me as an echo of SMG in “Anne.” As well as he did with SMG and her stunt doubles, he struck gold with Summer Glau as a dancer. Her fighting style was less punchy than Buffy’s, she had the longorous limbs to ronde de jambe about.
And there’s always been something to me about the clever use of Chanterelle/Lilly/Anne. Watching this episode always puts me in mind of Angel's “Blood Money.” I love the shot of her opening the bag of money to see there was, in fact, blood on it; so he warned her. But talent gave her the ability to blink, shrug it off, and tell him, “It’ll wash.” Nice for continuity and growth of incredibly minor characters.
buffy,
