"Well... this is a bit overwhelming and also an amazing validation of what all of you have accomplished in the past six years, students, faculty, and staff alike. Here's the summary (12 years ago, the School was ranked #25 with no specialty rankings):
2009 USNews National Rankings in Visual Arts & Design
The School of the Arts is now ranked 4th overall, up from 6th in 2003. No U.S. public university's arts and design school has ever been ranked this high in the overall ranking. So the ranking in order is now: #1 RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), #2 Yale, #3 Chicago Art Institute, #4 VCUArts (we share this position with Cranbrook and MICA).
We have solidified our stature as the #1 public university visual arts & design program in the United States.
We've also received 8 specialty rankings, the 3 continuing ones first:
Sculpture #1 (Yale is still #2!)
Graphic Design #4 (#1 public university ranking)
Painting and Drawing #8 (up from #10) (#3 public university ranking)
And our 5 new Specialty Rankings:
Fiber Arts #4 (our Dept. of Craft/Material Studies) (#1 public university ranking)
Glass #5 (Craft/Material Studies) (#1 public university ranking)
Multimedia/Visual Communications #9 (probably a combination of our departments of Communication Arts, Graphic Design, and Kinetic Imaging) (#3 public university ranking)
Ceramics #12 (Craft/Material Studies) (#6 public university ranking)
Printmaking #17 (our Dept. of Painting & Printmaking) (#10 public university ranking)
My congratulations to you for your contributions to this. As I've said many times before, each one of our departments and programs in Richmond and Doha contributes to how we're perceived nationally."
