Part II - Dreaming with a broken heart

"When you're dreaming with a broken heart
the waking up is the hardest part."

John Meyer

She couldn't do it at the end of the day. She couldn't sleepy with that random guy. She didn't even know why she tried - sleep with random is something she never was capable to do. The only thing she could think about was Alo and how she needed him right then. So it was surprisingly painful when she saw him with the goofy girl at school.

By lunch time, Mini took enough courage to talk to Alo, sitting by his side with her best smile.

"Had a good weekend?" he asked. She made a face.

"Not really. Think I'm getting sick, I don't know."

"What are you feeling?" he said before bite his hamburger.

"Pretty much everything. High pressure, low pressure. My stomach is really bad, if you wanna know."

"That's called hangover."

Mini laughed. "It would. If I had drunk anything."

"Hadn't you?"

"Not really."

"No weed… no alcohol… what's going on, McGuinness?" she shrugged.

"I'm just feeling very awful. Maybe I'm passing some sort of virosis for everyone. Who knows."

"Nah, it's nothing. You're gonna get well soon." They both smiled and stayed in silence for a while.

"So…" she started, but was interrupted.

"Ginger prince!" NG said, coming out of nowhere and kissing Alo's cheek. "Hi." And then she looked at Mini, who was faking a smile. "Hey Mins."

"Hi Poppy. It's Poppy, right?"

"Yea, got it right this time. Always looking good, you."

"Mini is sick." Alo said.

"She doesn't look sick for me."

"I'm very good at make ups." Mini answered, making Poppy laugh.

"You're funny."

"Yea, pretty much." Mini said in a cold tone. She and Poppy faced each other for a long time. "I'm… gonna go." She said finally, grabbing her stuff. "See ya."

"Bye." Poppy answered. Mini hadn't even turn around and he already was kissing the goofy girl.

She felt able to kill someone. Instead, she smiled.

The next days were getting worse and worse. She stopped talking to him; she didn't want to look at him. And they started to fight.

"You are doing it wrong." She said, about their literature work.

"No, I'm not."

"Yes, you are."

"It's the fucking same thing you did."

"But I changed, because it was wrong. Don't you pay attention?"

And fight.

"You are not helping." Alo said when they started to rehearse their scenes.

"What do you want me to do?"

"Help, ok? You're not being very useful."

"Are you telling me I'm useless, farmboy? Are you seriously saying it?"

He snorted. "Stop distorting what I say."

"Kids." The professor interrupted.

And fight.

"Why can't you just do a fucking mockup to science class right?"

"Stop it."

"You never do a fucking thing right."

"Stop it, Mini, your psycho! If you just shut up for a while and stop treating me like I'm five years old, maybe I'll be able to think!"

"You're telling me to shut up?"

"Yes! You keep talking, and talking, and…"

"Jesus, they look like a couple." Nick whispered, looking at them, eyes wide. Franky and Liv nodded, Rich laughed. "Scary."

Until it was too much.

"This is my spot." Alo said to Mini, about where she was sitting on the study room's couch. She just looked at him. "Okay." And he sat by her side.

"Is the school lacking in chairs' number, farmboy?"

"What?"

"Do you have to sit so close?"

He breathed slowly. "I'm not close, stop bitching."

"I'm not bitching."

"So, what's that you've been doing the last fifteen days?"

Alo reached to pull her hair from her face, but she backed away. "Don't touch me."

Irritated, he crossed his arms and looked ahead. Mini looked at him.

"Where's your girlfriend?"

"I don't have a girlfriend."

"Oh, don't you? Does she know that?"

"Is it about Poppy, Mini? Seriously?"

"She doesn't like me, I dislike her right back. You know what she told me? To fuck off."

"What is happening here?" recently arrived Grace asked to Rich, who answered. "The drama. I love this time of the day."

"And you are doing what she says?"

"I'm not doing what she says; I simply don't want you around."

"Unhappily, it's not possible, which is a shame, because I'm not really ok to be around you lately as well."

It made her shut up and face away.

"The thing is, you never tell me what's going on. We don't talk anymore and how do you expect me to understand the problem? I don't have any crystal ball, you know?"

She didn't look at him. Things weren't that simple, she couldn't say anything. She knew she had to, but she couldn't.

"Fuck it." She mumbled, grabbing her stuff and leaving. Alo followed her.

"No. Don't fuck it me right now." He said to her back. "McGuinness, fucking talk to me, right now."

"What do you want me to say?" she shouted, turning to him. Her tone was low and harsh.

"Anything. Everything. Like it used to be. We were great and suddenly, it's like Mordor here."

"We? There never been we."

"Stop fooling yourself, Mini. My mom adores you, you love the farm!" she laughed. "Don't laugh, I know you did! Fuck, Mini, you probably are the only person my mom likes!"

"Quit it, seriously. You're being irrational."

He breathed slow, choosing his words wisely.

"I'm not saying we need to go back to the fucking, Mini. We can be friends, but you're not allowing me anymore."

Mini's eyes were cold in a second and her expression tensed. "This is it, then, we're done."

"What?" she was turning to walk away again, but he held her arm. "Mini, you're not helping me understand."

"You want to understand? I'll make you understand, then. I don't need you, or your goofy girlfriend around me. I don't need you in my bed and I don't want to be in your bed anymore. I don't like the farm nor want to be stuck there for the rest of my life with a useless boyfriend who hasn't biggest plans for himself, or for me!"

The moment she saw the pain in his eyes, she knew a line was crossed and breathed in. Oh, no - she thought; but it was too late. He let her go and backed a few steps.

"Alright." He said in the same low and cold tone she was talking previously. "Got you."

"Alo… no…" she mumbled, lacking in words.

"It's ok, you made it clear, now. Fair enough."

Her eyes were wide. She watched him turn around and walk away. No - she wanted to say -, no Alo, please, walk back to me. And maybe she was actually saying it. She even gave a step ahead, but couldn't go any further. When he turned the corner, she got back to the study room, her head buzzing. She saw the gang looking at her, not understanding what happened. They couldn't hear them, they talked too low. Her feet were so heavy, her head ache. Everything went black.

When she opened her eyes again, it felt like an eternity later. Grace, Liv and Franky were all over her. "You okay, Mins? Say something."

"I'm fine." She whispered. "Thirsty."

"Here." Franky handed her a bottle of water. "Drink it. What you felt?"

"Low pressure, I guess." She sat up slowly and looked around. "Mind your own business, you all." She said to the people looking at her, making them go back to their stuff.

"Eat this, Mins." Nick said, handing his Doritos for her. She smiled.

"Thanks."

They let her eat and drink slowly for a few minutes, and she said nothing. When she stood up, everyone looked at her worried, making her put a face. "I'm okay, I can walk. That was nothing, really."

"Don't you need help? Wanna go to the nursery?" Liv asked, taking the bottle and the Doritos from her.

"Nah, I'm fine. See you guys in literature."

"Are you sure?" Grace said. "I can talk to dad…"

"Guys, seriously. I'm fine."

"But…" Grace started, but Mini smiled and leaved the room, going to the toilet.

She washed her hands and her face, looked in the mirror. And then, out of nowhere, she started to cry. Cry like she was watching some Nicholas Sparks' novel based movie or something and her relationship was the one going down a cliff, with the only difference that there was no relationship at all. They had the fun and the fucking and an amazing weekend in London and the farm, but no relationship. And now, all the chances to make it happen were gone, because she screwed it; she fucking did everything wrong and he was gone and would never forgive her.

She sat by his side in literature class at the exactly minute the professor started to stream a ballet version of Midsummer Night's Dream. Alo didn't even look at her, focused on the screen.

"Alo?" Mini whispered. "Alo, please, look at me."

"We need a good grade, McGuinness." He answered harshly. She swallowed.

"I know, but… but…" she tried, not really knowing what to say. He just looked when he heard her sniffle.

"Fuck's sake, Mini, quit it."

"Quit what? You think I'm faking?"

"You're telling me you are not?"

Mini dragged her chair closer to him. "Alo, please…" she put her hands in his face to make him look straight to her, but he held her wrists.

"This is not a good way to pretend you never had something to do with me, you know?" she cried more. They were whispering, but could swear everyone was listening. He didn't care anymore.

"Alo… listen to me, don't leave me. I lied, I need you. I need us to work, I just have been with a lot in my mind, please, forgive me."

Alo looked straight to her eyes serious.

"What's going on, for fuck's sake? You're not Mini. Put your shit together, woman."

"I have a lot of emotions right now, ok? And I need you-Alo…" She leaned her forehead in his, her last lines almost too low for him to hear. "believe me.I need you to believe me."

Alo stayed in silence for a long moment before back her off. "Find your priorities first, Mins. Then we'll talk."

All she could do was nod.

"Come on, Rags." Alo called, and the dog jumped onto his bed. "Come here." He tapped the space by his side, but Rags lay in his pillow, next Mini's smiley face.

Alo stared to the banner she and him had put together in his wall three weekends ago, when she felt so lost, the only place she thought was safe was with him. Probably the best weekend he ever had.

"You miss her, boy?" he asked and Rags cried. "Yea, me too."

-X-

Mini looked at her watch and started to check the files in her camera. She had a lot of pictures. With the girls, the guys, and with him. She didn't know why she hadn't deleted everything yet… maybe because that weekend was so magic. It had a few videos too. She played one, recorded by Alo.

"It's pregnant, the mare." He said.

"Is she?"

"Yea." She was petting the animal. "She likes you."

"Yea… girl power, ginger boy." Mini said legitimately smiling for him. "She's so pretty…"

"Yea. Yea, she is." He said at the end, a close up of her sparkling eyes.

She sighed, passing a few more files until she finds the one she was looking for.

"Good morning, you all." She said with a sleepy voice. She was the one recording this time. "It ain't even 6a.m. and this ginger guy right here woke me up to see the sunset. You know I would complain, but I'm not going to, because… it's beautiful. Take a look." She showed the daily miracle that the break of dawn is. "It's so fucking amazing, I can't even be mad at him, how is that I can't be mad at you, Alo?"

He laughed. "Because you can't resist me." And she laughed. "Yea, sometimes I think I can't."

"Oh my God, I can't believe you just said that!" he said smiling.

"Shh…" she replied, and kissed him; laying the camera in her lap.

"You know, for someone who's hiding a relationship, recording everything is not the best way to do it." He said, as she filmed them both.

"I know. But I wanna keep this memory forever." And the video ended with last a shot of the sun rising.

Mini swallowed and looked at her watch again, taking three deep breaths, before look at the test.

At first, she couldn't focus in it, but she told herself not to be stupid and actually looked at it. The word couldn't be clearer, as she wouldn't already know.

Pregnant.

She looked at a picture with him in her wall and remembered how she just ruined everything. And cried.
