'When our relatives are at home, we have to think of their good points or it would be impossible to endure them'.

Did your sister have a different background to you?

Yes. She was raised in America by her mother.

I like that saying.

Thought so. An American wouldn't talk about people with an American background celebrating what they do. They assume everyone's just like them.

'You can't choose your family.'

[There's a pointed pause]

And where do you think I'm from, then?

That's true.

No idea. Where are you from?

Not where you're from, although my brother is.

[She takes a moment]

Namibia.

Was your dad in shipping? Sounds like he had one in every port.

I don't remember being here. Just to clear that up.

No, he was in diplomacy, but he did. Four in America. Six abroad. I'm the youngest.

Your accent gives away Melbourne, you know. I had gathered that your memory was faulty.

Busy Thanksgiving. This one's my second in two months - still trying to work up the energy to care.

It's only faulty if we assume I'm the same person who spent time here.

Don't bother, then. Or come to the one in the Warehouse. Rosella cooks to feed an army, and I could always use another adult around.

[A laugh]

You might be. It took me a while to recover my memory, when I returned. But all right. Let's say you're not.

I'm Satya Daphne Wallace, but most people call me Saya.

Saya.

[It sounds odd, for no apparent reason.]

Robert Chase. Call me what you like. Rose-ella? Must be expecting and army if she's having a meal in a warehouse. Doesn't sound homely.

You can call me Satya, if that's better.

I like Robert.

We live there, she and I. We've made it work out.

So you live... together.

[The implication is heavy on that word.]

She lives on the first floor.

I live on the fifth.

We're not lovers.

[Oh. Worth an ask.]

Why a warehouse?

Because when I came here the first time, it was where I lived.

I don't remember why.

Then more people moved in, and Rosella's the last of them. The only one left. I like the space and I like the quiet.

Why, are you looking for somewhere to stay?
