In canon, Doug mentions that people's true feelings tend to show through in their eyes and he's able to pick up on someone trying to hide something that way, for example. While he can't read minds or determine exactly what someone might be thinking or up to and so on, he should be able to notice if someone is trying to cover something up or there's more to a person, unless they don't give anything away in their behaviour.
