Debian 2.4.27 crashes miserably
Its been two hours since I started troubleshooting the problem. During the boot my comp crashed showing the following, last couple of lines.

426: cannot open /dev/console no such file
kernel panic. Attempted to kill init !
----
[keyboard starts blinking]
Googling hasn't helped much...
The system was working fine until last Saturday when I added my old Creative CD Drive to it.
I don't know whether its necessary to recompile the kernel/add modules with change of h/w in ver 2.4.27. Googling made me realise that there are potential problems with SATA devices and the present version. And also, grub is not able to find the root filesystem following processing of initrd.img, hence the problem.
Probably time to upgrade my kernel now.
