Oh, this really sounds bad. I've read quite a few of McCullough's books, and have been pleased with all of them. But I've pretty much steered clear of her more fluffy stuff, which this certainly sounds like. It's terrible when a good author goes bad. *g*
I didn't at all put this down as "fluffy stuff" when I picked it up, but that's what it turned out to be. I still can't decide if it was poor writing (surely not in her case!) or done on purpose... It is reminiscent of that sort of book - by which I mean the "fluffy" kind where things in life work out through pure luck and coincidence rather than anything more realistic, and which I associate with a kind of moralising tone, too, so... maybe it was purposeful!
From what I've heard, none of the sequels to Pride and Prejudice carry over well. It was a different time, and people, especially women, were seen differently. Their roles in life were certainly different. But too many writers, it seems, turn the characters into 21st century role models. The women become strong, the men sensitive. I doubt that what happens in the book would have ever really happened.
