Just looking at that book cover instantly transported me back across the decades. My mum had a bookcase full of similar books, although not the Chalet school as far as I can remember, and I practically inhaled them. All midnight feasts and jolly hockey sticks, they played a huge role in my decision to go to boarding school. And that's where reality met fiction, and I lasted exactly one year before heading back home.
Thanks for the memories.

Memories are fun, aren't they! *g* And wow that the books inspired you to go to boarding school - shame they don't actually match reality... Oddly enough, my first high school had a boarding school attached (I was a day girl *g*) but I didn't associate it with the Chalet books and the like - maybe I felt that half the magic of them was that they were from the UK, and in Austria, and that Australian boarding schools couldn't be the same anyway. I have a strong suspicion that English boarding schools wouldn't actually have been like that either, mind... I guess now the kids all want to be at Hogwarts - I wonder if anyone's really been inspired to try a boarding school in Scotland...? *g*

Well it was a Church of ENGLAND boarding school so I had high hopes, even though it wasn't actually IN England *g*. And I DID learn to play hockey, so there's that.

Heee!

We had hockey at my first high school too, but being pegged as a reader rather than sporty (and being actively discouraged from the one sporty thing that I actually enjoyed, the gymnastics class which I'd gone to voluntarily at lunchtimes, that they turned into an afternoon elective and told me I couldn't do - even though they let all my other friends carry on with it. Not that I'm still bitter or anything... *g*) I didn't end up doing much of it. After the gym disappointment I contrived to be off PE whenever I could - though come to think of it, I think they did hockey just after I'd chipped the bone in my elbow playing netball one afternoon, so I had a real reason that time... I may have milked it a bit, mind... *g*

The sport that was always in the books that I've never seen (or been subjected to) live, was lacrosse.

The hornets! That's what I remember most - and the body in the lake!

Yes - they were fab! Though I rather liked laundry day too. Such well-meaning middles... *g*
