Impressed with the Beeb...

Jul 17, 2009 16:44

So, checking out the Beeb's weather forecast for today, I had a brief wee giggle that they'd predicted thunderstorms for 1.00pm - and yet it was thunder and lightning-y at 10 to noon. I've just been thinking about going home, and the heavens have opened with more thunder storms - it's quarter to five. The Beeb had also predicted thunderstorms ( Read more... )

Having been MIA I have no idea why you are searching for Torchwood or what you've already found but can I rec Lazuli whose site is http://lazuli.kat.users.btopenworld.com/index.htm
I adored Attrition and her short stuff is very good. I'm about to start on Hourglass, which people say is good but I avoid WIPs and she only just finished it.

You have been MIA! Are you home now? How's everything? Good I hope!

And yeay, TW fic rec, thank you! I've found a bunch of good stories (and lots of scary looking ones that I can barely glance at), but I'm still looking for more - and ooh, she seems to write long stories, which is fab, so thank you extra! *g* My favourite so far is one by dsudis, I think - if only I could remember what it was called... but it was long too! *g* Who else have I found? Copperbadge, Giddygeek, Out-There, Kaneko...

I'm home for a bit. All is well, if frantic. I am about to post an account on my LJ of our web access problems. When I look on my other laptop I will find some more Torchwood recs. I bought a new laptop to leave in Portugal with the idea that eventually I would use one or the other as an extra hard drive for backups - but the screen is too reflective to let me use it without the shutters closed... so home it came and I am dithering between laptops not sure what is on which for now!!

I must catch up with the Reading Room, too. Five weeks is a long time to be offline!

Eep for web access problems! Yeay for two laptops, though I know what you mean about the reflective screen thing - I was really put off by it when I bought my new one, but there's very little choice these days... I've got used to it, but it still annoys me...

Shall look forward to more recs - cheers!

Reading Room was interesting this week - I recced Velvet Underground by Sebastian, and was gobsmacked by the number of people who thought it was a rape/non-con fic... How is it that people don't read in context?!

Anyway - enjoy being home for a while!

I seem to have transferred most of my saved fics/recs to disc for safekeeping so I will have to dig them out!

I skimmed the Velvet Underground comments and I agree it isn't rape/non-con but when I originally re-read it and made notes, hoping to be online in Portugal, this is what I said - and I seem to be in agreement with some of the other readers. Except that I really am in a minority in not usually liking Sebastian. I suppose she just isn't my kind of writer.

Notes for Velvet Underground:
I almost never keep or re-read Sebastian’s fics. They’re very intelligent and cleverly written, but...

They aren’t usually my Doyle and Bodie. They leave a faint sense of dirtiness in my mind and that isn’t because of the BDSM elements in this one. I’m not sure what it is because I can and do read some BDSM fic quite happily. Somehow, she smears the characters for me. She uses too many carefully chosen adjectives, too many ‘please pat me on the back’ figures of speech, too many colons. She’s too aware of herself as an author and all the time ( ... )

Actually I think alot of people I come across these days tend not to like Sebastian, which is interesting, because the people I first knew best in Pros were like me, in that they loved her stories. It's interesting to see the way predominant tastes seem to be changing - and other debates, like the warning one, too, that I'd never have imagined seeing just 4 years ago...

Do agree that she goes overboard (in this and again in her other fic) with Doyle being "half Bodie's size", and she makes him extra-spiteful in her fics too. I suspect she doesn't really like him very much... *g ( ... )

I suppose my 'substance/glamour' comment was a reaction to what I see as a lot of adulation of Sebastian - I can see why she's popular but there tends to be an air of 'you have to like her' around at times. Can't quote anything/one but it's just a feeling. I do tend to like sparser writing and yet... I love your writing (and think it's better than Sebastian).

I think Attrition appealed as a longer fic - a lot of good Torchwood stuff tends to be disappointingly short. I wrote a very short not-quite-fic piece myself so I can't really complain. And it was 'experimental' writing so I really shouldn't criticise Sebastain ( ... )
