Well, been less than inspired over the past few days, and am now not sure which ramblings to start with.
Perhaps the festivities first:
1. One of my favourite christmas presents was a jar of Bransten Pickle. Funny how you don't know what you're missing until someone gives it to you on cheese.
2. My christmas decorations arrived in the mail. Today. The twenty-eighth of december. All ready for next year, right?
3. I must make roast dinners more often, I forget how good they are.
And the rest:
4. People are people, and evermore will be so. Nuff, as they say, said.
5. Other people are totally other types of people - and they deserve many good things forevermore. The post office was open today, and not only my christmas decs, but two absolutely fabulous pieces of wondrousness were in my box. You know who you are, and I am a very very happy fan-type tonight. Thank you.
6. I may have eaten too much bransten pickle today. Hmmn.
7. I am slightly traumatised by having reached season four in Judge John Deed - only five more to watch! Excellent opening ep, although I think Charlie as lawyer-type may irritate me somewhat. At least JJD told her off. Hee. On the bright side I shall move onto Scarlet Pimpernel and Jack the Ripper after this. *g*
8. Lots of lovely new icons around at the moment - how fantastic to be able to make them so beautiful... glittery-type stars to all the people who do that, and many thanks for sharing!
And finally (Ladder of Swords spoilers, if you haven't seen it):
I am completely enchanted by MS in Ladder of Swords. Oh. My. So very very. *works on coherent sentences* I thought he was very good. Nice to hear him using his own voice - oh okay, I know the accent was perhaps a bit dubious (extra-rich scouse with an irish twang perhaps?) but it was more Doyle-like and less JJD-like. Not that I don't like his voice now, cos I do, but I liked it then too, when it was a bit... lighter. You see, now we're into rambling enchantment, which is not really coherent territory of mine. When he was less resonant and more... natural? Not necessarily, but lighter somehow...
And the hair - very nice. And the beard - and I don't really care for beards to be honest, but this beard on this man totally worked. So much so that I was thrown and unsure when it was shaved off (lucky old Juliet). But it didn't take long to get used to that too, especially when he tied his hair back. Because, you see, his eyes... And, erm, digging the grave in his sleeveless t-shirt? Exactly when did he pick up all those muscles? I know he wasn't exactly skinny wimp-guy in Pros (some fics notwithstanding) but, well! And the whole baggy-jumper-gypsy look, which gets me no matter who's sporting it - on him? Wow. Playing gypsy music on a fiddle? And... and... and... Oh! And all panicked-and-needing-comfort? *faints dead away*
Actually that last bit, the panicked-needing-comfort bit, was so perfectly angsty-h/c-Doyle-in-fic that it was untrue... So I ended up with this weird cross-over feeling about the movie, it was both MS acting his little heart out (and not at all being "an actor") and just occasionally Doyle-from-fic!
And as far as the actual movie itself - I really can talk about the movie as a whole - I liked the characterisation, that he wasn't the perfect good guy - he may have been our hero, but that didn't mean he was all squeaky-clean good, he had a past and mistakes and a slightly dubious personality. Denise, his wife, was very good too - nasty piece of work she was... and of course Juliet is always fab, although I guess she was still in her kind of... pure character-type here... Gorgeous setting - love the moorland. Wondered for a minute if it'd been filmed in the Isle of Man (which would've explained why MS was there buying wellies from my aunt) but no, it was Tyneside, which is of course a lovely part of the world. Well, apart from some bits...
Oh, and I liked the music as well, especially the violin - lovely haunting, and just my sort of thing. I was having fiddle lessons in Somerset before I left - just about mastered Twinkle Twinkle and working on Little Brown Jug : ) - and this really made me want to get back to it. I must find out what he was playing...
And, hmmn - yes I think I may have wound down now. Except that
shooting2kill I think you're right, this may well have been MS at his most beautiful!
